JimWorld Forums: Font, Resolution, Browser, Graphic differences

When I look on my website at home it looks moderately good, but if I look on my website on some (older) computers that have low resolution it looks like hell. Also, there are differences between browsers. My website looks good on Internet Explorer, but on Firefox it looks like hell. How can this be? I frequently notice that colors are not the same (graphical differences), I see on older computers that lack a video card that the colors somehow are much less intense. I'm scared that this problem will affect the amount of conversions I have (visitors will just leave my site). Because everybody will think I have a terrible site. How do I resolve this problem.

Thanks.

It has been said that the rule of thumb for any web page is to model a site that can be handled by a 56k modem and a screen running 800x600 resolution.

Now you see all the big corporate websites not really applying this rule of thumb anymore, and with reason perhaps it no longer applies in this day in age.

Still, I would want to conform a site to 800x600; making sure a site can be handled on a 56k modem relatively easily can easily be tossed out now a days, its up for debate.

800x600 seems to be the new minimum in new computers and older computers can definately handle that - unless you are talking pre-1999 machines which in the computer age are dinosaurs.

As far as different colors go and layout - each browser handles css differently - or at least IE handles CSS differently from other browsers. I would recommend you do the research and create a style sheet for the different versions of IE and then one for any other browser. It is relatively simple to implement different sheets for different browsers and in this way you can ensure the colors and layout are the same throughout.

Hope this helps

So far I've been using JavaScript to select certain styles depending whether it's Mozilla or MSIE.

Just did a search and found this style sheet info:

Ok, do you have a tutorial about CSS and stylesheets. All my code is written in "basic" HTML, so I will have to convert all that to CSS.
