On looking around the net I see the same old lists of the various Google datacentre IP addresses everywhere.
We know that Google has grown in size in the last few years, yet most lists still have data from 2004 on them.


I always wonder why tools like McDar chose the particular few dozen IPs that they check for results.
I often wonder if they are still a representative sample of all of the available Google datacenter IP addresses.


It always puzzed me that for some ranges, such as 64.233.x.x there were several dozen available IP addresses, but for the 66.249.x.x range I only ever saw 3 or 4 IP addresses listed. Surely there were more?


I also wondered if there were any new IPs that have recently come online that haven't yet been listed.





So, one afternoon I set out to find out...

The two-letter codes refer to the datacentre names in use by Google up until some time in 2003 or 2004 when they swapped to the new system.

Entries with an - X are for datacentre IP addresses that are no longer online; most having stopped in 2003 or 2004.




For the most talked-about commonly used DataCenter IP addresses over the last few years, Google has actually indexed their own homepage content at the IP address discussed (because many sites have linked directly to the page).

They haven't yet done this for many of the new IP addresses on this list. That suggests that many of these IP addresses are new - perhaps some are for datacentres that have come online only in the last few months.

Don't forget those IP addresses that they use when they're not identifying themselves as Googlebot.

And the IPs that they use to crawl that aren't actually owned by Google.

These are just the IP addresses where you get a Google Search homepage, often identified as "Google English".

At the moment, there are at least three different sets of search results spread across them. Some are very different.

OK, now I understand. I was looking at my list that combines datacenter IPs with the crawler's IPs--most will resolve to a Google search if you put the IP in the browser, so I have a list that's a combined list and separate lists for the Google IPs that don't involve the bots.

Is that list online anywhere?

So how many physical data centers are we looking at here?


These seem to be just datacenter IP addresses themselves. I took a look at your ARIN search and noticed that it has the AS routing numbers which can give hints at the separation of network groups. McDar says as of January 2005 they had 26 datacenters.

An article I just read mentioned that they have data centers in Dublin, Ireland, California, Virginia(most likely the old Exodus facilities in reston/herdon) and now new facilities in Oregon with their Project O2 facilities in the Dalles and lastly new facilities in Atlanta. And this is only a partial list focused on the US.

They have some in the US, the Netherlands, and in Ireland, and had (still have?) some in Switzerland, and they are now also in China too.

Google has multiple versions of their index in play at any one time, and several experiments that are only on a few selected IP addresses. Google usually says nothing about what the different versions are, but did give out the IP address of their new "BigDaddy" version while it was still in early testing.

By trying multiple IP addresses directly, you can see a range of results, some of which are going to contribute to what the public will actually see in a few days or weeks time. If you are doing badly at some IP addresses it can be useful to track that result to make sure that it is only an experiment that doesn't continue, rather than being the main results that are going to be shown world-wide next week.

People that copy and paste others peoples work without attribution of original source are very easy to spot.

Reports of the demise of the old www-sj.google.com style Google datacentre URLs (back in 2004) were way too early.


They are over here instead, and have grown in number:

The old class-C blocks at 216.239.33.x (www-ex), 216.239.35.x (www-sj), 216.239.41.x (www-fi), and 216.239.55.x (www-zu) are long ago defunct.




For most Class-C blocks, each of these can be used as the final part of the IP address, and most of them will work:

17, 18, 19, 44, 80, 81, 83, 84, 91, 93, 95, (98), 99, 100, 101, 102, 103, 104, (105), (106), 107, 115, 133, 147, 184, 189, (210) and 214.

I have not found any equivalent gfe-xxn.google.com type URLs for any IP addresses except those that end in 99, 104, 147, or 103.

Google China has its own DCs.

Likewise 216.239.63.210 is non-functional, and I haven't found an associated domain name yet.


And finally, sandbox.google.com - someone has a very warped sense of humour over there.

Hmm. If I had found this page http://search.web-sun.com/zatu/data_center.html a bit earlier it would have saved me a bit of work here.

Seem like the Japanese are many steps ahead of us all over here: http://search.web-sun.com/g_search.html. That is way better than McDar any day.

Additionally, it looks like gfe-ar and gfe-fg and gfe-po are quite new it seems.

(*) Note that gfe-hs and gfe-ui both point to the same IP address at the moment, and that that address was the test "Big Daddy" datacentre.

I assume that gfe-hs (x104) and gfe-hs2 (x99) are the regular names, and that they later aliased gfe-ui (x104) on to it for "Big Daddy" testing purposes internally, as in gfe-ui.google.com for the full URL.

What is this IP stuff?

Do you guys use this info to optimize a different page for each ip address...im just guessing here.

If for the last few months you had looked at gfe-gv you would have seen roughly the same as you also saw at www.google.com most of the time.

If you had looked at gfe-eh, you would have seen results that were quite different.

A few weeks later though, and the results that were only at gfe-eh and a couple of others, now seem to be almost everywhere.

Looking at certain datacentres sometimes allows you to see what Google is working on towards the next version of their index.

There is never a need to check all of them. A small sample is usually enough. The posts just above also show Google adding to their capacity in recent weeks.

I noticed a few people ask the same question and no one has replied to them. I also have the same question, which is...why is knowing ALL the different IP's of google useful info???

As, you can tell from my question, yes I new to this kind of and would like to learn more. So if someone could please take the time to explain, why its important or useful to know ALL the IPs of google...please.
