I've always been happy with dreamhost.
But there's thousands of them, and not a lot of differene - except geography and the price.
Best way is to work out what you need (server type etc), what you want (extra features) - and where - then draw up a shortlist. Then compare prices.

There is a little confusion here. Hosts offer servers and facilities. It is upto the webmasters to make their site "SEO smart". Most hosts will allow you to add your specific Apache directives in the form of .htaccess.
It is important to select the technology and overall site architecture well before a site is developed. But many people leave this crucial factor to their developers.
It is vital that webmasters use the least common denominator when it comes to the choice of language/technology in which the site is developed - unless of course your Web architect so deems otherwise. This way you can change your hosts at a short notice. All Unix/Linux hosting will offer PHP/Perl as standard. Any additional proprietary technology will be hard to come by even if you are willing to pay.
If you are convinced about hosting with westhost, Talk with your developers to see if they can rewrite the CFML pages into PHP.
If your site doesn't have too many pages, it may be the simplest solution and the most cost effective.
