I am thinking about using a product called FocusGenerator to generate post-it type pop-ups. Does any one have any experience of using this product and is it effective? Thanks.

Never used it, but since you mentioned "popups", I'll advise you to be careful.

I have used a similar, desktop based product - well, used to use it - it just to be a PITA and after ignoring it and closing the "pops" over and over, I finally removed it from my PC.

It is a desktop product but they say that it can be set to show one pop-up per session. Haven't tested it though.

Just be careful - users, and many online ad providers such as Google, hate the things - in fact, Google's Adsense program specifically states (IIRC) that you cannot belong to the program and run their ads on your site if you use pops on the same website.

make sure you read through all the Terms & Conditions G has, then - they can "see" things like pops fairly quickly, and often the webmaster's first indication there's an issue is suddenly the ads aren't showing anymore on the site.

No ads = no revenue...

Here's what Google says in it's Program Policies:

"Site may not include:

....Pop-ups, pop-unders or exit windows that interfere with site navigation, obscure Google ads, change user preferences, or are for downloads. Other types of pop-ups, pop-unders, or exit windows may be allowed, provided that they do not exceed a combined total of 5 per user session"

That would suggest that they permit the limited use of pop-ups so long as they don't block the AdSense ads etc.

And there we have it. One per session should be fine.

keep in mind also, that using pops may be effective in themselves, but may contribute to an errosion in Adsense revenu from lower clicks on the adsense ads themsleves.

One user - multiple choices - you need to determine which is the best balance between revenue for you and the user's experience.
