Design it very well, provide exceptional content, and actively locate and request links from sites that already have traffic.

You could use some traffic exchanges. I know it is a pain to earn credits by clicking but it is a good method to build and opt-in list. Give away some targeteed freebies and collect names and emails. This way you can eventually launch an email campaign to drive prospected consumers to your web site.
You also need good content and themed Back links of course.
Write some articles and submit them with your links in the resources box.
Good Luck to you,
Jack

To get traffic to your site, submit your site in directories, update content regularly, add fresh content, prepare blog, & most important use proper keywords. Use targeted keywords in your content. All these points will help you in getting traffic to your site.

Well, it all starts with QUALITY CONTENT. Make sure you stock your site with compelling information that your prospective customers would be interested. Make sure you write them in such a way that Search Engines can find them easily.
Everything else will revolve around your content. Excerpt it (link to it) at sites where your target customers are already gathering. Create a newsletter out of it. The possibilities are endless.

As for generating traffic to your site:
First, embark on a solid article marketing strategy by writing unique high-value articles about your site topic and submitting those articles to other sites, ezines, etc. Do this on a regular, consistent basis. Have a resource box at the bottom of each article that contains your site's URL.
Then embark on a link building strategy to get other quality sites to link to your site.
Doing so will generate targeted traffic directly from all the inbound links AND improve your search engine ranking (which will also bring in more traffic).
Once you have the traffic, be sure to have profitable sales copy to convert the traffic to paying customers.
Of course, underlying all of this is the assumption that you have a product (or products) that your target market actually wants and will pay for. If you're trying to sell a product nobody wants, all the traffic in the world won't do anybody any good!

You can't go wrong with starting a blog, tagging the posts with technorati and pinging with pingoat.
I just started a blog two weeks ago and I've already been getting 120+ visitors each day and growing.
Just make sure you are giving good, valuable information on your blog.

Writing articles is a very good way to draw traffic to your site. It is free and fun if you can get the hang of it the right way.
If you can manage to formulate a strategy for writing article you will not have to BUY traffic. Besides when you buy traffic it is a hit a miss. It is not targeted to your website.
A Few Tips to help you get the idea, and do some research on this subject.
Planning is key, and what message you want to convey in your article.
That should be a start to constructing your article.
Setting out what you want to say, practice by writing one without concentrating too much on the construction. You need to write freely and have the confidence to conjure/add more without loosing track of your article.
Anymore ideas?.

I simply want to agree with some of the other writers here---writing articles is a truly easya nd effective way to get traffic to your site. It may be slow at first, but once they are out there, there is solid traffic. I also find that the traffic is of a higher quality --tends to convert nicely.

I just read the original post again and want to comment on how to get "that traffic to become real customers". More important than getting traffic is their experience when they arrive on your site.
Most sites are not designed effectively and do not turn traffic into "real customers" consistently if at all. I've compiled some excellent information on doing that in a thread here called Designing Web Sites for Higher Sales.
I cannot emphasize enough how important it is to meet visitors' expectations. It is very easy for them to click and go somewhere else if it isn't clear how a site offers what they're seeking.

I have a site and want to add a blog page. What is the easiest way to do that? I wanted to use blogger.com. But I didn't see how to make it a part of my domain (www.mydomain.com/blog) OR give it the look and feel of my existing website.
I am sure there is an easy answer to this.

That is getting pretty helpful. So I can publish my blog content to my web server and format it there after receiving it. So my blog is sitting in my blog folder on my webserver as html files? what is the best way to reformat or include these files after receiving them?
Also does that mean the blog exists in two places? Won't it get dinged for duplicate content?
I appreciate your guidance.

I never used blogger.com service; so can't give 100% correct answers. But I will try:
So my blog is sitting in my blog folder on my webserver as html files?
I guess, you are right.
what is the best way to reformat or include these files after receiving them?
Why do you want to reformat pages on your server? I think, you should do it on blogger.com and then publish it on your server.
Also does that mean the blog exists in two places?
I guess, you are right again.
Won't it get dinged for duplicate content?
May be. Don't submit your blogger.com url to anywhere; then you may be safe.
HTH.

"u can get that kind of heavy traffic by proper web hosting, proper marketing and link with higher page rank Web Sites "
not really, the sites must be relevant and the links must goto a relevant page within your site. to many people have all their incoming links to thier index pages. WRONG
proper hosting is a point, beware of and know your neighbor hood, ipblock and share server sites.
"You get traffic to your site through forums, article submission, link exchange, blogging and social bookmarking
"
too many people misuse this concept too. they just drop links everywhere, it is spam and really &#$#&@%'s people off. It must be within relevant content and add to and complement the forum thread or article. posting for posting sake is BAD.
as stated, articles farms, some forms of link exchanges and link farms are over.

why don't you share here. social bookmarking sites you need to be careful of dupes and directories need to be more than just a link farm. Directories are being devalued.
whats your angle
this is probably a spam thread anyway, look at the dates and the number postings by certain people in this thread.

At the end of the day - WHO CARES ABOUT HOW MUCH TRAFFIC YOU CAN GET TO YOUR WEBSITE?
What matters is - once having them arrive can you provide a clear path to allow them to pursue what they seek? Do you have what they want and do you make it easily accessible?
When folks are seeking they want nothing more than a simple path to FIND!
I know of many sites that are so useless in crisp clear navigation, short precise do it nows and identifying with the user in general.
How about forget about traffic and concentrate on the user experience.. give them what they want and let them seek and find. Trick them into coming without giving substance and you loose them.

Some day people will understand the difference between links and links that send real people interested in what the site offers - and the sites will understand what real people want to do and make that easy. I suggest Steve Krug's fine book Don't Make Me Think

Viral marketing is very effective.
Come up with something truly unique and place it on your website so people start telling their friends. If you have the skills to pull something like that off yourself, you could get a lot of traffic without spending a dime. But it's very difficult.
Have a look at digg.com and others like it for inspiration - a lot of that stuff going around there.
Also, the classics: write articles and submit them so others post them with a backlink to your site (fairly longterm), add a link to your site in your signature here on this forum (and elsewhere), comment on peoples blogs (but don't spam) and so on...
Oh, and create a blog if you're up for it. Make sure it pings places like pingomatic.com when you write, and it'll bring in traffic over time.

i just read this thread again for the first time in a long while.
first and foremost, and i don't think this has been addressed,
provide something of value to your site visitors (not you)that lots of people want. If your site doesn’t fulfill a need, be it information or a product, nothing mentioned in the thread will help you at all.

One way to get traffic is writing in forums and joining into discussions such as you're doing. Another way is to look to Ebay and do an about me page, for an item you're auctioning. Ebay, Google etc all get huge traffic.
Another way is to create a spin with a nutty kind of auction and somehow connect it with your website. Its a little tricky but possible.

If it's interesting and you maintain it, then it will help. Just 'having' a blog will not make a significant difference.
There are so many millions of blogs, that one more won't create a ripple unless it stands above the boring masses.

email marketing same as your forum spamming isn't a great way of promoting, because you can have your server be penalized for spamming and most wont respond or even read your emails, only if its for a targeted audience then you might have some success with it

Top 5 Ways To Generate Low Cost Website Traffic:
Exchange Links : Many webmasters are willing to exchange links with one another so that they could produce more public awareness about their sites. You’ll soon see and feel the sudden upsurge of the traffic coming in to your site from other sites.
Traffic Exchange : Traffic exchange services are the viewing of another’s site or page. This is done vice versa where a site can use your sites contents and so can you to his or her site. You both benefit from each others efforts to generate traffic. Once again the public awareness of your sites existence is boosted.
Write and Submit Articles : There are many e-zines and online encyclopedias in the internet which provides free space for articles to be submitted. If you want to save costs, you can do the articles yourself. Include a resource box at the end of your article that can link them to your site. Write a little about yourself and your site. If you provide a light, information-laden and interesting article, they will go to your site for more.
Make a Newsletter : As your newsletter gets pass around, you can widen your public awareness and build an opt-in list that can regularly visit your site.
Join Online Communities and Forums : This only requires your time and nothing else. You can share your knowledge and expertise with many online communities as well as your website. You can get free advertising when you go to forums that have the same subject or niche with your site.

Neither of you are wrong; note that mj said most.
The key to directory use is Quality Directories - and no directory that asks for reciprocal links has the remotest idea of what quality means, let alone how to achieve it.
Fewer that 5% of directories probably qualify as Quality - and if you separate out local and niche directories, many of which are excellent, probably fewer than 1% of general directories are Quality Directories.
