problem with 2nd and 3rd level pages being indexed

I am bit flummoxed on this one. Three sites all with same hosting/developer. All dynamic and decent PR. Some of the pages- some of them even linked off main page- are not being indexed by google, etc, I have been trying a few deep links but so far nothing. I don't know what's up here. I am not programmer- but webmster has basically thrown his hands in air and declared it not his problem. Any ideas?

Have you tried to get them indexed by getting links to those pages on other sites?

Also, there are other reasons why a page might not be indexed, such as requiring a cookie or not having the proper links going to it (such as a javascript link, etc. on the home page). It could even not be indexed because of the number of IDs in the URL (i.e., the length of the URL).

Without knowing more specifics it's hard to tell you exactly what it happening and why those pages aren't getting indexed.

Here's a sample of one of the pages that isn't getting indexed:
www.yourdomain.com/page.aspx?tabindex=-1&tabid=29

Google and MSN don't have any issues with those URLs. In fact, they're both indexing them just fine. However, Google, in this case, is actually removing pages from the index because it thinks that they're duplicates.

Lately, I've been seeing more and more cases where Google is actually removing pages from their index that it deems to be duplicates--you're not the only one who is dealing with this issue. The answer is to add more unique content to each page (e.g., unique title tags, unique meta tags, unique text/copy on each page).

thank you so much for taking time to look- thishas been driving me crazy for about 6 weeks. Now other than the fact that you have a big brain- how can you tell that google is indexing and discarding vs. just not indexing?

That's a good question.

MSN is showing 87 of your pages, complete with their title tags and a snippet of text from the page. From what I can see, they are duplicates (the title tag is the same on all pages and the only part of the snippet of the page that's different is a keyword). MSN generally cannot pick up duplicate pages that well.

I compared the pages that MSN has indexed and MSN's results to the way Google is showing your pages in the index and the pages that Google has indexed. Based on that comparison I was able to determine that Google considers those pages to be duplicates and is in the process of removing them from the index.

Google lately has been doing a very good job of catching duplicate pages and removing them from the index. Google first finds the pages and shows them with the full title and description/snippet. They then show them as "Supplemental Results". They also will begin to show only the URL of the page before removing it completely from the index.

In this case, a quick site: command in Google shows pages at various stages of this process (some supplemental results, some with a full title and snippet, and some with only the URL showing). I've watched many sites suffer this duplicate content penalty and disappear from the index.

There's good news, though. All you have to do is make each page unique and they'll be back in the index fairly quickly.
