To answer mandag's post, it's likely the two "engines" share similar thinking in their algorithms, but it's not like G would have shared the source code with them.
All engines are giant filtering devices - with various bits of "intelligence" added here and there to help increase the likelihood of highly relevant results being returned.
If that software has a problem with returning relevant results for INTERNAL searches, something is not set up right: there's not a large enough cache for the index to be built in, things are getting dropped, the system running it is slow, etc., etc.
I've heard of some companies being pleased with that search options, others dumped it.
My guess is that applying SEO efforts to that system will only be partially successful...unless they maybe forgot to actually name every single document they've ever created.
