Google's Recommended Bids and Budgets

Where do they get these numbers? Just opened a new account and there are a whole TWO advertisers in this space. Put an ad in while opening the account and Google's system estimates 1 click, suggests a bid of $3.09 and a daily budget of $3.09.

I hope most advertisers aren't accepting these suggestions. Paying $3.09 to be first when you can pay under ten cents to be third would be totally unnecessary for most businesses. There are a few who may need to bid for first or second but certainly not this one.

On the opposite extreme I've added keywords that I knew were running 40+ ads and had their system indicate I could be first for any amount I tried. I have to assume that the system is only using numbers for those advertisers who have that exact keyword phrase in their account and not all the phrase and broad match ads that will also run.

Anyone new to Adwords may end up substantially over-bidding or setting bids so low their ad never gets impressions. It isn't immediately obvious whether no impressions means no searches. At least now you can more easily check to see if the keyword phrase is actually running. Many advertisers probably didn't realize there was a Ads Diagnostic Tool.

Is anyone using a custom report to check average keyword position or found a nifty way to determine if a keyword's impressions are falling off the first page?
