Can you use the {keyword:} variable in the destination URL as follows, and would it be best for one to add something such as "other" as a backup?

That will not work. The first step to testing any potential tracking code to determine if you can use it is to plug it into the address block in your browser and see if you can get to the page. I tested your format and attempted to go to www.google.com. The format generates a 404 Not Found message so that will not work. Removing the quote marks and leaving the brackets won't work either.

If you want to generate tracking codes for individual keywords there are online tools and downloadable excel spreadsheets. Note that for tracking from sources other than Google Adwords to work in Google Analytics you must use the specific format Google Analytics requires.

You can use the Google Analytics URL builder or a spreadsheet programmed to add this specific format. Justin Cutroni has created and posted a Google Analytics tracking spreadsheet in his blog.

Well, putting the "'s in was my error in the message, post, not actually using those. Regardless, using the ?src=adwords&kw={keyword:other} will allow the target site to load without any issues at all... the real question was, will using the {keyword: } within the Destination URL sill have Google place the keyword used in this string? I cant see why it wouldnt work, but wanted to check. Perhaps I will check with google specifically.

I've tried variations on that without coming up with one that would work. You could try some and see if they show up in your analytics information. You know that Google Analytics requires their particular tracking format, right?
