As for the conferences, they usually offer two tracks - one beginner, one advanced. Even a day-pass would get you access to the "Site Review" sessions, which can be fun. The experts sit up front, take suggestions on sites to look at, then offer ideas on what you could do better, or answer specific questions.
Nice bit of hands-on that session - can get really funny when "cowboy" thinks their site it the bees-knees, then gets a few things pointed out during the session - been there, seen THAT happen...LOL
Other than that, the Beginner track is designed to teach newer folks the basics and offer advice on where to concentrate your learning efforts. (This is by virtue of the topics covered, not necessarily folks saying "Learn this" & "Learn that"
As always, many session are put on by a company selling a product - regardless, the data shown/learning expereince has value, IMO.
The parties are great, too - like there's a lack of entertainment in Le Grand Pomme anyway...LOL
