Moving entire site to https

My company - major financial institution - is considering moving our entire site to https. Everything I've seen in SEO articles, blogs, etc., says not to do this, but https pages do seem to be indexed and show up in the SERP's. Any suggestions?

It shouldn't be a big deal, unless you hide everything behind a login.

So, moving to the secure server shouldn't be an issue - it's making everyone login to see anything - that's a problem for the engines because the spiders cannot get in to crawl the pages.

what is the reason for the change.

if your selling on the web, the only part that needs https is the cart.

Essentially, the reason we're looking into securing the whole site is because we want to secure our homepage, which the login to our online banking application is on - although it's on a secure form, it's on an unsecured page. The IT guys are saying it's just easier to put the entire site into https. And although the login will be secure, the site (other than the online banking app) will be accessible without needing to login, so crawlability is not an issue.

I know this is not best practice and does not make sense - that's not the info/comment I'm looking for here. IT will likely get their way, even if it's the wrong way. I just need to find out what the impact on SEO will be. Thanks again!

not a problem for pages that a regular site visitor can access without logging in.

I suggested not to move the entire site to https as it have negative effects on the future ranking of the site.

IT guys are just being lazy. I deal with them on a regular basis. Sorry, sore spot with me, been burned so many times with IT guys asserting opinions on web site solutions that arent better just easier for them to create.
