Site Entry Redirects

Here is another situation.

User enters site at site.com/, they select their location and are brought to site.com/location. From then on, they are "cookied" to automatically go to the /location page.

Is this cookie safe with SE's. My impression is that there are no real problems here as the SE will not store a cookie, therefore, will simply follow the site from the main TLD's links etc, but I wonder if this is dangerous as returning visitors will see a different home page than visiting SE bots...

The client is thinking about swithcing this redirect to one that is IP based to autodetect which version of the site is best - I believe that the IP based system would be more likely to impact Google... thoughts?

Google will follow the normal links and ignore the cookies.

It sounds reasonably safe.
