Choosing keywords correctly

Hi guys,

If I optimized a website under the keyword 'pink floyd tabs' and I inserted this keyword in my META tags would this enable my site to appear in the results searched for 'pink floyd' in google? or would I have to optimise it for that specifically?

As 'pink floyd tabs' includes 'pink floyd', it would enable your site to appear in the serps for either search.

aj, do keep in mind though your content should also match your tags

yes I am putting them in the meta tags thats why i want to get it right cus you have to say what keywords you want to get ranked for through the tags. Though i thought they were not used by search engines nowadays?

If I put 'pink floyd guitar' in my META TAG as my first keyword will I still get picked out and ranked for 'Pink Floyd' and 'Pink Floyd Guitar' as both keywords are included in the one?

..If not, shall I include them as two separate keywords in META TAGS or is the second keyword not noticed by the engines?

if you want to rank on google then dont bother about the META keywords just focus on the META description

Yup, meta keyword tags have virtually nil value with any search engine these days; meta description matters because it can influence how your site appears in search results.

But what really matters is the content of of the page.

If your page is about pink floyd, and also about pink floyd guitars, and it's a good page, then it will figure for those key phrases.

Don't sweat it; just concentrate on making a good page ... then another (on pink floyd tabs), then another (on pink floyd picks) ... . *that's* the way to get good results, not obsessing about the placement of three to five words.

Look at the big picture; is your page unique and interesting? Is it about what it says it's about?

Is it the best on the web for that topic?

Fantastic...so if keywords have absolutely no effect on page ranking, if you were me would you not bother with putting them in?

If we're still talking about keywords meta tags; then either don't have one at all, or use it appropriately; with any tag, even if use counts for little, *misuse* can do damage.

Currently, they are pretty worthless, though rumour says that Yahoo! picks up misspellings. But that doesn't mean they'll never ever be used again.

Though there's little likelihood in the foreseeable future.

The advice pertaining to Meta tags here is correct. You must use the phrase in the Title tag too.

The title tag is by far the most important of the tags SEO wise.

I emphasis this as it's not actually a Meta tag.

I think what you're asking in the first post is will i be found for different variants of a term, and the answer is yes, BUT the performance will be less than that of the full term.

Ie take a page themed for 'pink floyd tabs', with titles and meta descriptions as that.

You will have marketed your page for all or any of these (listed in order of prominence)

pink floyd tabs
pink floyd
floyd tabs
pink tabs

and also the following to a minor degree..

tabs pink
floyd pink

etc etc

BUT, the biggest success in terms of serps would be 'pink floyd tabs' , as that is your full term. The other variants will see a significantly reduced success rate, but will still work. Ideally, you'd create seperate pages for each term if you wanted to be spot on with your SEO, but sometimes this isnt possible, especially with e-commerce sites.
