I must admit I am not as educated about SEO as I should be. It is my understanding that there are just a few things that make a site rank.

1. Linkage - links from directories like yahoo and open directory and all the smaller directories that are related to the sites. Preferably directories that have page rank or of high revalance. Should this be a different person that the person who I hire for below.

2. Content - Placement and Density or Keywords in mind. Should this be the same person that handles the linkage? How often should a company change content on their site to maintain rank? Weekly or Monthly? Should the copywriter no optimization. Should they know about linkage?

3. Meta Tags - Should they be changed every month, quarter, etc. Is Placement and duplication in tags bad and whick ones should I use? should the person doing the content do this job.

What is the most important thing that you can do to make a site rank in importance,

Thanks

Links aren't number one, content is. Layout, structure, density and superior content trumps all. There are no short-cuts. Your professional copywriter should be able to adjust the content to fit what you are trying to accomplish. If they don't have the vocabulary to do so, fire them. Never change the Metas once you have achieved success in the engines and be d****d careful about changing the content also.

Any company that wants to change the content of their site hourly, daily or monthly - and wishes to maintain a high SE indexing - is rolling the dice nowadays. If your company isn't in the Forbes 500, tell them they'll have to suck it up and compete.
