I currently know how to use Perl/CGI and want to learn PHP.

Can some of you that know both tell me how they compare to each other?

How easy is PHP compared to cgi?

Where should I start? Do you use a free downloaded compiler like perl?

Can you guys list some good tutorial websites for this language....perl has tons, I'l assume PHP does too.(been to a couple already)

PHP is usually offered integrated into the webserver. So, any file that ends with the extension .php or .phtml is treated as PHP file.

Probably one of the best ways of learning a programming language is actually doing something with it. If you want to play around with it, and if you have a hosting service somewhere, chances are that PHP is already installed on it - upload a file with extension .php and with content

    Code: [copy]

    and see what you get.

If you don't have PHP enabled hosting accounts, there are many packages that install Apache / MySQL / PHP on your windows computer. I did a quick search for it and first result was easyphp.org and it sounds like it should have everything to get you programming.

Install the Apache webserver, PHP, (and maybe mySQL too), and you can start programming right away.

No better way to start learning than to get right in.

Get PHPdev if you want to run a local copy of Apache and PHP on your home or office windows box for development and testing (the free package also includes mySQL, PHPmyAdmin, an example PHPwebsite, an FTP server, and so on).

Theres a pretty good free editor called "Crimson Editor" that works well for just about any coding you'll need/want to do. If you're serious about PHP/MySQL and don't mind spending a little bit of money I recommend the book "PHP and MySQL Web Development" it was written by Luke Welling and Laura Thomson and will give you a really good start on PHP. It covers the basics right up to user authentication and security issues. Brand new its around $38USD but you can find used ones for about $16. You can also check out http://www.phpbuilder.com and www.php.net.
