There are some web developers who tout the advantages of building websites using what they call "Open Source Software."

Just how SEO-friendly are sites using Open Source Software?

It appears to be a dynamically-based built site using a Content Manager System. My experience with such sites is they're very limiting in enabling good optimization practices.

For example, based on what I've seen, the URLs incorporate the navigation labels, so that you may get something generic like yourdomainname.com/guest.htmor yourdomainname.com/guest/signinourguestbook.htm.

Thanks for any input.

depends on who's Open source software, what it was made in, how it functions, and the list continues...

some can be, some use obsured coding that make it impossible for search engines to figure out if it is a website! lol

from first impressions, the url's look SE friendly, but that's one factor of many.

Many solutions suffer from having many different URLs that can access the same piece of content: even well known forums like PHPbb and vbulletin suffer from it. Search engines do not like that sort of duplicate content.

Many also do not have the ability to have a custom title and meta description on each page either. That is another thing that can cause big problems with trying to get a site properly indexed too.

Those are the main points, but there are others. Most packages need extensive rework to eliminate such basic design flaws before they can be properly used.

I agree with dubibob and g1smd. All that "Open Source" usually means is that perhaps they're making an attempt to keep the price down, maybe, or make maintenence easier or both.

But the backend methods have almost nothing to do with SEO. Bad pages can be created and delivered using virtually any backend code/system/package/etc, and still be equally bad.

Unfortunately, the vast majority of cookie-cutter solutions out there - as g1smd points out - were never designed with SEO in mind at all and crank out mostly un-promotable pages.

Even in this forum software, we missed a trick here and there, and some corrections have recently been made to the way that some of the URLs are generated for certain types of pages.
