I am new to content sites, and we're in the development/layout/design stage. I don't know anything about being a publisher at online ad networks, e.g., FastClick, DoubleClick, Adbility, and I'm trying to set aside space in the design for the most sought after ad sizes/places - for maximum profitability.

I don't know what the ad networks prefer and what types of spots pay the most. We're trying to prioritize just setting aside enough room for the best ad sizes so our visitors won't be annoyed with the advertising.

I find that the best advertising you can do is through affiliate programs. It is more risky, but the profit margin can be higher. The best ads I know of are text ads. Find a good service and recommend them. I.e.

"How to pick a good widget

Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla.

--------------------------------------------------

If you want to find high quality widgest, you can visit xyz.com and get great prices.

--------------------------------------------------

Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla Bla."

As far as banners, I find them a lot more enoying as a user. The 468*60 for either top or bottom of the site and 120*60 for side bars would be the standard.

I agree. Text ads to affiliate programs are more risky because you can't really assess the quality of the program. You tend to get a lot more clicks with a poignant text link but if the product doesn't deliver, the visitor is likely to have negative feelings from then.
