Themes and branding of the product service might dictate the black background, but on the whole a site will be easier to read with lighter backgrounds, if it wasn't easier we would use black paper and a white pen.

Check this site out that uses a gray color theme. It is one of the best looking sites I have seen in a while. I know its not a black background but its related a bit...

After a long and hard thought process, I decided to use black when I relaunched my site. But, to make it easier to read, I bumped up the font size one and used a dark color behind the text so it wasn't pure black. After running it by my strict standards for whether it works (my friends, who are extremely picky about web design) they gave it the thumbs up, and it seems to be holding up OK so far.

Of course, I'm the tinkering type, so I'm sure in a few months I'll have ditched that for other waters... smile

Yes, good site layout, but do not like black backgrounds, even for photo gallery pages (too many sites of special kind wink ).

Try to get some seamless images for your galleries here:
