I'll vote for that, I've been able to tweak images more with fireworks, as far as final compression goes. So if you want to create it in something else, and then finish the work in firworks, that'd work too.

I can only speak for Photoshop and Fireworks.
Both have the same compression functions, if you are using Photoshop there is a SAVE FOR WEB command which is very good.

I had a play with fireworks for compression and feel I get a better result for compression with corel photopaint.

Without a doubt that Fireworks does better compression than image ready... hands down

If you're not using database driven sites, heres my tuppence:
Photoshop - Essential, amazing software, get it, get good at it.
Image Ready - Great stuff, making rollovers is about 10 times faster than Fireworks, exports to html including all ur links and slices.
Fireworks MX - I used to like it, now i think it sucks. Good for two things, quickly making pulldown menus and batch processing, IMHO its very limited.
Dreamweaver MX - Essential, unless of course you're one of those Notepad Nutters!
Image Ready comes with Photoshop, so u just need Photoshop and Dreamweaver MX - dont waste ur money on the Studio MX package as u'll never use the other bits, they all have superior competitors.
