Why does the WebTV show such a small area of the web page? I mean, most tv's that are being used would prolly be 19' or bigger...i would think it could show the same if not more area than a computer monitor.

As I understand it (please correct me if I'm wrong) it's not the size of the monitor it's the screen resolution. I think baffled wrote that the highest screen resolution of a tv screen is 544X372. So when you go to the lower screen resolutions, everything appears bigger. The lowest I can get my computer monitor to go is 640x480 - so I have no idea what it's going to look like on a tv.

That WebTV site has a vast amount of information regarding why WebTV browsers work the way they do, including information on the TV screen and why its resolution is what it is.

In the most simple terms, all of it's because that's how TV broadcast standards were set years and years ago, well before computers ever existed. Whether the TV screen is 13 inches big or 32 inches big doesn't matter...the TV signal sends only so much information, so the TV was designed to only reproduce so many lines.

My best advice is to download the WebTV viewer (its on that site too) and check your pages with that. You can then decide if any changes are worthwhile to make it more WebTV friendly. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't...just depends on what I would have to do. I mostly just cringe and bear it!

RenKen...I believe WebTV's font size changes are down proportionally ...size 3 text will still look bigger than size 2 text even though both are enlarged. I don't think points and pixels are treated any differently, but I don't have a way to test it.

Thanks baff. did not know that stuff about tvs and such.

I was looking on the WebTv site and set my browser window ( via browsermaster ) to the WebTv size, and even WebTv designs too large for the screen to handle...i got scroll bars...that sucks!

I just downloaded and tried that tool - it was a lesson I'll not soon forget. However, the site I've been working on functions, so I'm very happy. Some of the graphics look really terrible, but I'm not going to worry about that, the text is readable and that's what counts.

What was awful was there was no scroll bar. Unless, I'm not using it right, to get to the bottom of the page, you have to keep pressing one of those buttons on the "remote control". It made moving about the page go very slowly.

Scary isn't it? I was rather shocked myself the first time. I know a couple of people with the real thing, and that viewer seems to pretty accurate...for what that's worth!

Yeah...no scroll bars at all. Remember, there's no mouse, so what good is a scroll bar? The actual remote has a scroll button that speeds things up, but it can't right scroll at all. It just mushes stuff together until it fits the horz resolution. Anyway, it's nice to know that your site still works, huh?

Yes, the first view of a site in WebTV can be quite a shock ... especially if your lovely tan letter-paper background comes out ... fuschia! (This was a couple of years back, as I recall.)

Here's a thread with some WebTV links I compiled: WebTV - How It Displays

baffled, that's great data about TVs. I guess that's why the display (picture) on larger TVs usually breaks up into lines.
