have only been doing websites for a short time and finding I am needing a combination of graphics programs to get things done. I presently use corel,fireworks and photoimpact 6 . some of the programs are intense to get to know properly so I am after opinions on what programs are recommended for web graphics (or combination of programs) before I get too involved in the ones I have. Have been thinking about getting adobe design and could really do with some opinions. Is there a single program that will handle almost everything? thanks.

Adobe... is a good choice but...the price is not what I would say is "right" especially for a new company starting out.
As far as Bang for the Buck...
Look at bundles from http://www.ulead.com
or http://www.jasc.com
or http://www.acdsystems.com
All have software bundles for image editing and altering that fits your budget. Honestly Photoshop is like using a ChainSaw to cut butter when it comes to doing web design.
If you are looking for a HTML creator software as well, I wouldnt go the way of Photoshop, I would go with Macromedia MX Suite (Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash, Freehand) As far as web design goes.... Macromedia has Adobe hands down....
Price is something you should seriously look at .... There are many tools you can get to create images and web sites for under a $100 a pop. I just mentioned 4 companies that do it all

Paint Shop Pro 8 is good(thats what i use). Its cheap and really easy to learn without reading loads of boring tutorials.
Never really bothered with Photoshop, But ive heard its the best thing to use with 3d max, and over all is better than every other graphics proggie.
Ulead photoimpact is good for putting special effects and stuff, And you can make can make some really good tv scanlines with it. (They really improve your pics).
I use PSP8 and Ulead to stick some fancy stuff after.

Thanks. I now have photoshop but I am finding I still use ulead photoimpact quite a lot.

Steve if u want to get things done right, use Adobe Photoshop - it's the industry standard for graphic editing.
Takes some getting used to but once u know the basics u'll be fine.

Please you do NOT need to get a copy of Photoshop to create a web site (especially a legit copy Spud) If you are creating a web site you can get by with many of the mentioned above titles and honestly if you do web design for a living like I do, you would invest in Macromedia over Adobe any day...

Adobe is good for creating, handling and optimising images, it is not good for intended to be a web design tool.

Whatever the tools you use to create and manipulate the images, you will be better off using this free image viewer as the default for opening images - http://www.irfanview.com/. It is fast and has the capability to view most of the images you will come across. It is a light weight image manipulating software as well.
I agree with others that the industry standard PhotoShop is probably the best bitmap image editing software. When it comes to optimizing your images for the web, it wins hands down. But it takes a little getting used to. All powerful software require a bit of learning.

huebdoo. I have both adobe and macromedia suites. If by macromedia you mean fireworks personally I do not like it. But I would love to hear opinions on it especially if it has advantages over photoshop for web graphics.

For graphic editing, then IMO Photoshop cannot be beaten, but...it's expensive. If all you are likely to do is web images, then Photoshop Elements is well worth it. I've tried Paint Shop Pro and I personally prefer Photoshop, or Elements if on a budget.
As for web design, I use Adobe GoLive, I find that whilst it's not as popular as Macromedia programs, it does all that I need and integrates well with other Adobe programs.

Personally, I like Photoshop for image editing myself, although I'm still working with version 6 because it's all I need at the moment. I've seen this argument in other forums, where one couldn't stand Fireworks and would rather use image ready.. Fireworks is great for a lot of image manipulation (but not for editing imported bitmaps), rollovers, and simple animations. But it was never meant to be the be all, end all of graphics editing. However if you have it and paintshop pro, you're probably in good shape without Adobe Photoshop. At a lot less dollars. I tend to use Adobe more than Jasc because I started with Photoshop, but Jasc is not a bad little app, either.. I acquired it as a possible alternative in view of the ever climbing price of Photoshop.

Photoshop is the standard, however I use it and MX STUDIO, with fireworks. You won't go wrong with either one for "web design".

Just as with HTML editors there is a lot of elitism attached to this question.
The elitists will always recommend Adobe but what they don't tell you is that anything you can do with Photoshop you can also do with PSP, and for a lot less cost.
It isn't the program that makes the graphics, it's the user.
By all means use Adobe if you want to spend a few hundred bucks more to undergo a steep learning curve. If you want an easy to learn/use program that creates graphics of equal quality to Photoshop, go with PSP.

Humpty, and in the same respect anything that can get done in PSP can get done in MS Paint if you work hard enough. I personally started out using PSP back when it was free, then after using Photoshop for so long that program really does seem unusable to me now (I install the new demos now and then). I agree, it can accomplish everything that Photoshop can, but I guess I just have more of a appreciation/understanding for the flow in Photoshop.

Guess I'll throw in my 2 cents here too.
I've gotten to use Photoshop, Fireworks, and PSP at one time or another, and here's my view on them for graphics:
1) Photoshop: Not essential, but get it if you can. I only got to use the Mac version, but the complexity of things I could do to/with images was great.
2) Fireworks: Good, not great as far as creating and editing graphics, but it's the ability to easily add web-friendly features(e.g. image rollovers) to it that makes it stand out to me.
3) Paint Shop Pro: Not as packed as Photoshop, but great for the price. True, you can do everything with MSPaint, but there's always a point where it's worth your time just to pay for PSP.
The only other thing I might add is the IrfanView tool(http://www.irfanview.com). You can't really create images with it, but if you just need to compress, crop, or convert an image on the fly, it's quick, easy on system resources, and free.

I use Photoshop for creating all of the graphics, Flash for small pieces of animation and then put everything together in Dreamweaver.
An alternative to Photoshop is GIMP - http://www.gimp.org/the_gimp.html

Thanks again. Just one more question.(the threads are a bit lacking at the moment so I'll milk this one)
Would everyone agree that fireworks is the best of the above programs for final compression?
