Is it just me or does everyone look at their website when your about quarter through making your main page "you think to yourself this looks very good" then halfway through you then realize how s**t it really is. Can anyone give me tips on what kind of graphics, Layout etc.. should i use on a site which sell things(I really havent decided on what to sell yet).

I suggest that finding out what you are going to sell is the first step. That way the inspiration for the graphics will be suitable to the target audience and show the products in the best way.

It's really difficult to flesh out a design layout if you're not focused on your target audience.

Depending on what you sell you may want to use very simple colors and design. For one company site I design most of the visitors most likely have old computer with slow connections, so I make the graphics as small as possible (file size); Check this freeware program out for gif files, it helps reduce their size, it adds up if you have hundreds of gif pictures...

Well, if you want a business site that sells things, you need to keep it easy to navigate, fast loading and compatible with as many browsers as possible. Stay away from the flash and tricky DHTML menus that only work in IE, for example.
Take a look at sites like amazon... well organized where the focus is on finding the items you want, rather than on glitz and innovative design.
