I notice when using Irfan view, I can elect to NOT save the EXIF and IPTC info and I get a much smaller file size as a result. Normally, I've been using PhotoImpact XL to optimize my pictures and create thumbnails, but XL doesn't have these "save EXIF / IPTC options". I don't understand why it doesn't...

Can I presume these smaller file sizes as a result of not saving the EXIF and IPTC info is a good thing and worth my while?

I've also been doing some reading on "progressive" JPEG and have seen some conversations that "progressive" isn't the greatest thing in the world. Is there a bottom line answer on whether to use this option?

Well, I don't know what EXIF and IPTC are, so I can't help you there.

But I like progressive JPEGs. smile They appear like interlaced GIFs so you start getting the whole picture right away and it gradually gets clearer. I hate when there's a really big JPEG that hasn't been cropped and you wait and wait as it slowly starts to scroll down while the whole time all you're seeing is part of a wall or something behind the subject which could have been cropped out.

I don't know what EXIF and IPTC are either but here is what I do for my pics,
I use adobe photoshop to optimiate my picutes. It has a preview mode so you can see the origianl and optimized picture. Some times I have to sacrafice quality for a faster loading time, but then you could always make thumbnails.

Well, after having worked with these freeware programs, JPEG Cleaner:

http://www.pppr.sk/rainbow/programs.html

and Irfan View:

http://www.irfanview.com/

(I must say Irfan View is one heck of a program.)

I'm convinced there's no reason not to clean pictures; saving the EXIF and IPTC data is a waste of bandwidth unless you have specific reasons to leave it in. The file size differences I'm getting are substantial.

EXIF data, as I now understand it, is camera info that is discarded by the browser. IPTC data is text data not used by the browser. Great stuff for photographers and some imaging programs though.

In terms of the "progressive" mode, I'm still not sure what the compatibility issues are amongst browsers. I'm still looking for a website or article that spells this out.

What scannist says and...

EXIF data, as far as I understand it, is data like shutter speed, ISO, aperture settings and such like of the camera.
