Photoshop for bitmap creation and Illustrator for vector.
I have never been a fan of Marcromedia's Freehand and Fireworks. They do a good job with Dreamweaver, Flash, and Director, but I just can't stand using their other products. It is the same thing with Adobe, I love their Photoshop Illustrator and Acrobat, but I hate GoLive, and Premiere.

Fireworks is a 1st class software, much more confortable to work with when it comes to web design. It has all the necessary features for any advanced web design work. Furthermore, if one is registered user at Macromedia, he/she can download add-ons that can really make the program more powerful.
Photoshop is another great program, but it has too many features that no one really needs. If one can't use Fireworks, I doubt that will be able to properly use Photoshop.
Another software that I love is Corel PhotoPaint. It is less powerful than the first two, but it has a lot of nice brushes, effects etc. Sometimes, I design something in Corel PhotoPaint, than import it in Fireworks.
These are somehow expensive programs. However, you can try, with nice results, Paint Shop Pro or GIMP (which is free and in the future, I think, will compete seriously with the software afore-mentioned). And there are a lot of other cheap photo editors, more or less powerful.

Now I see that you are interested to make a logo design, too. Then you should draw it vectorial. Adobe Illustrator / Corel Draw if you think you can make it like a pro and it is worth to spend $$$ on such software, or Zoner Draw 3 (free download at Zoner.com) or OpenOffice.org Draw (free download at openoffice.org) if want only to try something.

i think you should try using MicroSoft FrontPage if you intend designing a html only website. if you need to add Flash and other add-ons, then why dont you combine Microsoft FrontPage and Macromedia DreamWeaver MX 2004. i think they will give you want you neeb in web designing.
i think Adobe Photoshop and Imageready should give you everything you need in graphic designing.
think abot using these softs.

Frontpage blows. I personally think it is the worst Wysiwig ever made. It throws in garbage code and never validates. If you want a website that will work in IE and only IE then use frontpage. If you want a program that knows how to handle CSS (without screwing up your style sheet) than Frontpage is not for you.

Hi
I reckon that if you invest in a GOOD training manual for Fireworks you will be very suprised at what you can achieve But as in all things dont try to run before you can walk.
I have tried to come to terms with fireworks without the aid of training (NO GOOD) but seem to be doing reasonably well with the aid of Macromedia's own book Called using fireworks.I am sure that you would be able to get a training book localy (there are lots)and most come with a CD that have tutorials to work through.
I found this the only way for me.Roy
