The site I am currently making looks horrible in 800 and looks great (at least to me and the client) in 1024. I don´t think it will be possible for me to make the whole thing fluid and I don´t want to discount the visitors at 800. Is my only other option to design it for 800 and centre the page so it looks reasonable in 1024?

What res do you design for and why?

I usually design a fixed size layout. If you choose the width at 760-780 px it will look great both on 800 and 1024. You can also use a flexible layout, and - for very big resolutions only! - try to set up in css a max-width property, but this unfortunately will not work in IE, so 90% of the users having big resolutions will risk to see a very wide layout.

    Normally 800*600...

Below is quick example of how you can make the width of the last column to 100% so that it will always fit your browser no matter the screen size.

    Code: [copy]

Of course, design can be a problem using % instead of fixed width. I do tend to try to use 100% width when i can, but sometimes i have to keep it static.

Suppose it might have to be static, and centred in the middle of the browser.
