i keep reading about them and i see them more and more....

my question though is are they as useful for SEOing as for visitors navigation ? and if they are good for SEO is there a standard format / tag / parameter that should be used...

Very useful. They are just normal links. The text is shown as:

Home > Section > Topic > Item


The links are just normal links pointing to:

"/"
"/section/"
"/section/topic/"
"/section/topic/item/"

There's a great explanation of the breadcrumb trail here.

Jakob talks refers to the breadcrumb trail when talking about linking here. A breadcrumb trail orients the user as to where they are on the site.

A breadcrumb trail also helps the search engine crawler crawl all the pages on the site.

Focus on the visitor & their navigational needs and most likely - search engines will take care of themselves. <--Maybe we should frame and hang such trite comments smile
