I have been using CuteFTP for over 6 years. I have a registered version of the early 1.1, which is perfect for my needs... except one thing: it does not remember logins and passwords when I transfer it to a new PC. It does have an "export" function, but all it does is a txt file from which I have to manually copy all the data when installing the software in a new PC. Since I have 40+ websites, it is quite a lot of work.

What simple FTP program do you recommend, that would remember logins and passwords when transferred from PC to PC? - It can be freeware or paid software.

You might try ws_ftp le, which is free. I've been using that for basic ftp tasks and it's just fine.

Hmmm... ws_ftp le is no longer available; it has been replaced by WS_FTP Home 2007 which costs $39.95. The price in itself is not a problem, but I see that ws_ftp le was a 656kB program, whereas the new WS_FTP Home 2007 is 10.5MB. That's quite a difference and I wonder if it is not another case of a good program having gone bad. In fact, I am even reluctant to download the evaluation version. Any ideas or advice?

Yeah; I am experimenting with Filezilla now. I tried SmartFTP and found it too complicated.

I use Cute FTP Pro (and I use Cute HTML to authour websites)
Really simple to use...
Download evaluation version for 30 day free trial:

Adding - LOL - I am an idiot! Sorry, didn't read your post properly, but we don't have any trouble when transfering to other PCs etc...Maybe if you upgrade?

If the Password Manager settings are right, you just need to transfer the data when setting up...

Also Mark.... have a read of this thread over at Globalscape...
If someone loses their passwords, then all that needs to happen is to restore their Site Manager data file (SM.DAT) from a backup. All login details are stored there.

I use FTP Explorer 1.0.10 and that stores all of the FTP user account details in the registry.

I would think that it would be an easy matter to export that to a .reg file and then re-import it, on another Windows system.

Yes, but the actual program offered is no longer freeware. It redirects in all cases to the new new version. Even if I found the old install file, it would be short-lived, as I read reports of ws_ftp le not working with Vista.

Thank you all for your input.

The reason why I had not upgraded my early 1.1 version of CuteFTP is that the new versions all appeared full of useless features, and unclear. For my particular needs, CuteFTP's "improvements" have actually made that program less attractive.

I am currently experimenting with FileZilla (freeware). Its layout is simple and efficient. Not sure yet about backing up logins and passwords. If it does not work, I'll experiment with g1smd's suggested FTP Explorer 1.0.10.

The latest version of FTPX is no longer free, but there are enough copies of the earlier FTPX1010.ZIP out there in the wild (size: 661KB).

OK, I managed to get FileZilla working the way I need. I could not find the "Site Manager" export tool (it is in Site Manager -> File -> Export). It works perfectly once I found out how. Also, despite being freeware, it has pretty good support in their forum, where the Site Admin showed me the way. Thanks for all your inputs here.

I recently started using "Core FTP Lite" and found easy to use. It's free. You can download it from download.com

I use FileZilla now, as for one site FTP Explorer (which I have used for about 8 or 9 years) would never list the files.

I have been using FileZilla ever since I had experimented with it (October 2006) with no problems whatsoever. They have a support forum, which was useful to me once when I could not figure out something. Yet another excellent freeware.
