For sites with shopping carts that also need a real-time automatic customer credit card verification and payment authorization (a "payment gateway") ... what companies are good?

I've read all kinds of stuff payment gateways, but it's all pretty blinding.

Need help. Any ideas?

I've only had experience with two credit card processing companies: [url:http://www.ibill.com]IBill[/url] and Epoch. While I can't say I have been overly impressed by either company, I am more satisfied with IBill than I am with Epoch.

I've been using Internet Secure for about a year now, and I'm very happy with them. They are more like a merchant account than a gateway -- customer credit card bills show your company name via IS, and they deposit directly to your bank account twice a month. No security deposit, but an 8% rolling holdback (it gets deposited after 6 months), bank rate transaction fees ($1.50 per, plus 4%), very low monthly fee (I pay $15 CDN). Their security is fantastic, and they have the lowest chargeback rate in the industry (less than 1/2 of 1%). There is a setup fee, but I'm not sure what it is for US accounts.

All of my deposits have been made on time, and they haven't made a single error in calculation. I'm impressed.

Check out this site. I have found it very useful. This website list and ranks companies that offer Mercant Services. They include a detailed description and also allow visitors to leave comments about the websites.

Hello,

Would you care to share your experiences with us? I am looking for a service which will accept a non-US merchant and / or host their shopping cart. This is mostly for souvenier / logowear type stuff.

Diane,
The site that you looked at for me, "outlawgoods" uses www.merchantcommerce.net nothing but good things to say about them. Real easy to work with and pretty low fees.

AuthorizeNet is a very reputable network with lots of member banks. I've helped several clients get merchant accounts there for real time charges when many banks would take them on because of no business history.

Each member bank sets it's own fees, but they all have to stay sharp or they can't stay a member. It's also nice dealing with credit card people who are web savvy ... not all those who offer merchant accounts are.
