In the rush to create better websites, I think it's always good to sit back and study other ideas and sites.

Where the Twain Shall Meet (my title) http://www.alistapart.com/stories/gap/index.html

Harlem.Org -- this redesign is a breath of fresh air, at once deceptively simple and complex. I'll bet they spent a good deal of time achieving it.

Hint: the picture is an image map.

It used to be that image maps did require more than simple HTML skills, with all the <img src= usemap= ...>, <map name=...>, <areas shape= coords= href= ... > whatever. But things have changed and there are now editors (like FrontPage or DreamWeaver) that make mapping an image a lot easier to do.

Also, there are quite a few good graphics program that can do this (like Ulead and ColorWorks). You just load your image, specify your hotspots, and voila!, they even generate the HTML for you.

But of course for those who'd rather write everything by hand, it's not really that complex. Just requires a basic understanding of the HTML AREA element, which defines the image's hotspots.

Yes. What did you think about the rest of the site? There are a lot of elements that aren't immediately apparent. Very clever and yet sleek and sophisticated in its apparent simplicity.

(You use the image map to access a good deal of the site.)

I'd say a classic application of art in Web design. I'd probably guess the the site was conceptualized by a musician, as reflected in its style.

Subtle elegance. If you noticed, aside from the slategray nav strip, the rest of the site is in black and white. Even the photographs, and the icons which are just as appropriate: the staff measure, the bass cleff, the instrument. Cool.
