Hi everyone.

This is kind of off the top of my head, but I'm hoping someone can help anyway.

My post required pictures, so I've decided to just make a quick HTML page instead of actually posting here since images aren't allowed.

Please read it at: http://www.fontframe.com/coolshapes.html
and post your replies here!

Thanks so much for putting up with my ignorance...

Don't know about advanced effects but would drawing two intersecting ellipses not achive this kinda effect?

Oh my gosh, that's brilliant WebCynic! I most be a total moron to not think of that.

Thank you so much. I (for test purposes only) just copied one of those logos exactly within 10 minutes! It's so simple... yet so profound. I think I'll write a book...

Okay, back to planet Earth. I'd still be interested in knowing if anyone else has any other ways of doing this!?

Thanks again WebCynic!

There's the hard way (trying to draw a perfect oval by hand) and the easy way ... make an oval, fill it with color, then use another oval to chop out part of the first oval. Then apply shadows, bevels, etc.

Best done in a graphics program than has "layers".

Both PhotoShop and Illustrator have drawing
tools that let you make more sophisticated curves as well -- curves with a little more subtlety than two intersecting ellipses can make.

I think programs like CorelDraw and MacroMedia FreeHand also do this, but I haven;t used them. Corel also has an entry level program called Xara Webster that can do some of this as well. What's nice is drawing the basic shape in a vector drawing program and then it can scale as big or small as you need without getting the jaggies.

I know that the two top Adobe programs can cost big bucks, but there are also lots of businesses today that let you rent time on a Mac or PC loaded with all the latest. In my area there are copy shops like Kinko's and even some free public libraries. Some cyber cafes as well.

That's how I learned these programs -- by renting -- then finally decided to invest in my own copy. I used to create the file I needed on a rented computer and e-mail it to my account or bring it home on disk.
