I have been fooling around with the graphics on my site and have tried to make my page load up faster by compressing the images. I used spinwaves web based compression tool.

Well, the result was dithering of the images and a poor compression job. I was wondering if anyone knows of compression software that is reasonable priced ($20), or perferable free, that will do a better job?

Can anyone also suggest ways to help my index page load faster without sacrificing the graphical or regular content of the page?

If you're talking about the site that's in your profile, I don't think there's much more you can do. More to the point, I don't think there's much more you need to do. There are very few graphics on the page and except for the logo, they're all fairly small. I didn't take the time to add everything up, but I'd say the page can't be more than 25-30k which is well within the reasonable limits.

If you're getting complaints that the page takes too long to load, I'd consider switching to a faster host. But the page loaded fine for me.

Sorry, can't help you with the question about compression software.

You might gain a little bit of speed by breaking your page into smaller tables.

Because all the page content is contained in one big table it has to load everything before it displays (more or less).

Creating a couple of smaller tables can help speed things up. You can make it look like it does now.

This is the only example I can show you that I have online at the moment. WARNING! Commercial site link follows!

This site is set up in three tables. The top section never changes, the bottom only changes the links, and the center changes as the page contents changes. Looks like one big table.

Hey,

I guess it all depends on how much you'll be using your program. But what you could do is download a trial version of Macromedia Fireworks. Get what you need done and... well actually you'll probably end up buying it cause youll see how cool it is (I swear by this program and Dreamweaver) but thats beside the point.

Good Luck
