OK, now that we got the JPEGs out of the way here are a couple of articles which show the best use of gif compression.Some things to keep in mind;
-gifs are only 256 colors max
-they are best used on graphics with solid colors (because of their limit in colors)
-they are compressed horizontally (meaning they weigh more with vertical lines than horizontal lines) OK here we go: http://www.killersites.com/1-design/gif_compress.html - Shows the different file size depending on patterns

I personally recommend Intergif (FREE from http://utter.chaos.org.uk/~pdh/software/intergif.htm ) available for RISC OS, Windows and Linux. You can customise how many colors you graphic ends up with (or use it's automatic 'pallette reduction utility) and "optimisation is often better than that performed by either GIF Wizard or Website Garage's GIF Lube." (which I agree with).It also has a 'dither' option for smoother graphics (no blocks) and a 'trim' option to get rid of white-space around the main image.
