Do you believe that it's worth the time to add a little something to your web page that reflects the holiday?
For example MSN has the little hearts next to their logo. In the winter they had a snowflake. Has anyone received any emails from a surfer saying "Wow! That snowflake around your logo is great!"
Granted companies like MS don't feel the weight of the little hearts around the logo in their budget, being staffed with several graphic artists.
But what about the "mom & pop' shops" Is it worth their money to invest in it? What are you investing in anyway?

For most sites, I don't think so. But maybe if you have the right kind of product for sale. For instance, if you sell chocolates, a Valentine's theme may be appropriate for this time of year.

Have you seen the "stupid web tricks" It's got a fun snowflake tool... Not much of an investment (or too hard to implement yourself) but it it's fun in a cheesy kind of way.

When you decide to do holiday & seasonal themes on your websites dont forget that it may not be relevant to lots of your visitors.

For example, winter themes sound like a great idea until your realize that the southern hemisphere (eg: Australia) is currently enjoying Summer weather.

While easy to do, be careful those Java snowflakes don't work well when um lets say the surfer doesnt have java enabled.

Of course, such frillies are de rigeur for a site like mine. wink No, nobody ever comments on them.

But I never comment on the mint on the pillow or the fresh flowers on the table. I do appreciate them, however.

OTOH, on a site like Microsoft, I (personally) find it a tad disengenuine... there seems to be a suggestion of intimacy (shared experience) that I am not comfortable with... OTOOH, I like it that google does it... go figure.

Bottom line? If I had to spend money on it, I wouldn't do it. Not even on my site.

You know I noticed it too, whenever MSN has a little seasonal logo on their site I just don't think its genuine as well. Perhaps, its because I know how big they are and the amount of content on their front page. That I feel its not personal.

When I go to google and I see little bears and heart shaped balloons working really well with the logo, I see it as a seasonal interactive logo-search-engine hybrid. Completely theming the site into the holiday spirit yet maintaing their unque identity.

Why do you guys suppose it works well for one site and not for another what methods are used? What makes you feel its not personal?

IMO we might not think anything from MS is 'genuine' because of their corporate reputation and not the nature of their site(s) OTOH I think its annoying when Google does it too --> The only place I have actually appreciated a seasonal logo was on a bbs where I knew the Admin 1. did it himself for his own community and 2. visited and was faced with it as often (or more) than me
