Has anyone tried to "secure" graphics so they either cannot be saved from a website or cannot be printed if they are downloaded? I have a client that wants to put thumbnails of classic car paintings on a website but prevent a visitor from d/l and printing them (he is selling the limited edition of them). Any ideas?

Let him know that lots of people are successfully selling art on the web. He should display samples that are marked as samples. If he posts the full images online people will have to download them just to view them. One good option is to chop them up. If someone has to re-assemble a picture just to print it, they might not bother.

Even if you chop them up, a person could do a screen capture and just crop the entire picture.

The best way is to put a visible waterwark in the center of the image.

Check out http://www.eyewire.com they display the images they sell...but they put their logo sort of in a raised transparent way in the center of the image.

Just browse their single downloads. They show you a thumbnail...but when you click on it the larger image has the watermark.

Don't even try that annoying right click trick. It doesn't work for protecting your images and infact detracts from the navigatability of your site. Water mark it baby

And as xero correctly pointed out, only a watermark can prevent the ultimate copying --- screen capture...
