I am curious what you all do when you get designers block? I.E. your siting there putting a site together and you just can't come up with anything to change it too, or a design theme etc?

Apparently i go read and post in forums

But does anyone have any suggestions to get some creative idea's going? I'm tired of the boring look my sites have (granted im new but still),and am looking for some fresh thoughts...

I think its different for everyone.

The key is knowing your work habits. Personally I know that I procrastinate allot. Which is cool for me because I do all my best work under pressure.

If I do decide to work ahead, sometimes I can sit there for 5 hours and keep deleting my PSD files and starting over from nothing. This sucks because I cant charge anyone for it. Other days I can whip out some kick butt graphics in a matter of 10 minutes.

So personally I made a rule for myself, if nothing worthwhile has been created in 2 hours, drop everything and go play. While I'm out and about in the city or anywhere I try to look at ads and negative space and shape, this really gets me "inspired" to do some work.

Sometimes I just realize it's 4:00am am and I should go to bed and try again later.

xelA, good ideas. I've found tons of websites that are inspirational to me. Usually when i get a block however, I just play games or something.

If I get a block I just leave my computer. I don't even bother trying to figure it out or waste time on it. I shut my computer off and walk away. I do something else like play my guitar or go out for a coffee or something. It absolutely never fails that about a 1/2 hour later I have a kick butt idea for the design and I'm ready to get some snappy stuff together in a hurry. The only trouble is that after I'm inspired like that I work for hours at a time, with absolutely no concept about how long I've been at it. I've seen alot of sunrises that way..

I go to websites like http://www.freesitetemplates.com http://www.coolhomepages.com
to find inspiration. I don't copy the designs, but I normally find some elements I like, and then some idea on pops up in my brain to make a complete design.

This is one of my biggest questions. Design ideas are the only thing I can't follow a formula for. I get great ideas some days and am totally stuck on others. Every time I find a site design on the web that I like I take a screen capture of it and store it in a photoshop file - then on those dark days I browse though the file seeking inspiration. Another thing I do is to just play with my graphics software, the clients logo, a photo library etc until something clicks. I'm always looking at ads on TV or in print. It is very important to me that my designs are unique so I don't directly copy another design - but other designs do give me inspiration.

Thanks for http://www.coolhomepages.com and http://www.freesitetemplates.com

If your inspiration falters, two things I often do is (1) surf other related sites for ideas, (2) analyse just what it is I'm doing and how the user might actually interact with it...
