I'm trying to take a instrumental version of a friend's song and have it automatically play when the page is loaded. I've transferred the file from .cda format to .wav, but I read that you need the file in .mid format. Is this correct? Any suggestions on where to go from here? I also plan on editing the complete song and just take a 30-45 second sample and just have it loop (so I keep file size relatively small). How can I accomplish that? Thanks for your help.

Hello,A .wav file should work fine. Place this after <body properties>. <BGSOUND Src="http://www.yourdomain/your_sound_file.wav" LOOP="true"> Loop= "true" loops and "false" plays once.

Just remember that if you include a .WAV file each user will have to download it when they load the page. If the .WAV file is 30 seconds long, it's probably quite large since .WAV files are notoriously inefficient.

I think that what Kenny meant was that a .wav file should work fine for IE and WebTV users. Only IE and WebTV will recognize a <bgsound> file.If you want this to work for any visitor with sound set up in their browser, the cross browser tag is <embed> which works smoothly. <embed src="your_background_sound.mid" width="150" height="80" align="right"></embed> Embedded files apparantly can loop, thanks, xelA. Some people will not be able to hear it, so don't make it critical to the site. (For example, the deaf.) Some people will choose not to hear it, and some will drop you a line telling you what to do with your sound file. It's a bit of a briar patch, with so many surfers being at work and all. I'd make some options for my visitors. Allow them to choose to hear it. Allow them to choose the sound file format, the appropriate file size for their high or low bandwidth, and if they want it to loop or not. This one is pretty self explanatory: <EMBED NAME='stupidsound' SRC='/sounds/bg2.mp3' LOOP=true AUTOSTART=false MASTERSOUND HIDDEN=true WIDTH=0 HEIGHT=0">[This message has been edited by xelA (edited 08-26-2001).]

Thanks everyone for the advice. I still haven't been able to find a "good" .wav to .mid convertor program. And it seems like there isn't one, at least one that does a decent job. I've been reading the reader comments from those who've download freeware/shareware programs, and the responses aren't looking very positive. This seems like my only obstacle now. Converting my .wav selection to a nice sized, good sounding .mid file. Has anyone successfully done this?

Why not convert it into an mp3? ...I've done that.

That would be fine as long as MOST everyone would be able to access/listen to the automatic load. I imagine that mp3 format would be smaller in file size compared to the .wav or .mid format. How would I go about doing this?

I remember I downloaded a little program at Flashkit.com. It allows you to make "internet quality" mp3s that load relatively fast.[This message has been edited by xelA (edited 08-30-2001).]
