On one of the sites I maintain, part of the page's text is not printed, it isn't all inside the right margin.

Now, I've seen some sites with pages the same width as mine, but can still print fine, with all of the content being printed perfectly.

Am I missing something here, something that could automatically make the pages more printer-friendly, or should I just try harder to shove all the content inside the margins?

Thanks!

I can't relly give you advie without looking at the site. However, I would just suggest making a "printer friendly" page. you can just place text into a 500 pixel column or something.

Well, if you'd like an example, one of the pages on the site I have problems with is here: http://www.engext.ksu.edu/ees/henergy/index.html

Maybe I need to find a way to shrink down the whole page, I don't know.

Any suggestions are REALLY appreciated!

I have two things for you to try. First, why don't you try installing a "Printer Friendly Page" script to see if that helps? Printer Friendly scripts usually strip out all of the graphics etc and just print whatever text you choose along with your header & footer. You might try this one here: http://www.willmaster.com/master/webmastertools_content.shtml

Second, I noticed that your pages are designed with layers. While layers seem to be a good idea for designing pages, they don't always turn out quite right across all platforms. I'm wondering if its possible that the printers are having trouble interpreting where the pages start & end because of the layers. You might want to try converting one of your pages into tables uploading it and trying to print to see if that is the problem.

Just a thought or two anyways.

Didn't mean for my reply to take this long...but we had to back-burner that project for a bit.

I tried tables, not a bad idea, but now that makes the graphic bars on the side look segmented, more clunky.

Has anyone been able to get text to stay printer-friendly, even inside layers?

Thanks!

Are you using the same graphic? Try 'slicing' it (cutting it up into smaller peices to fit correctly within your table. You can also try using a shim or hard coding the image with "height" & "width" tags so that it doesn't expand if thats what you mean?

Just a suggestion too but if you're going to forge ahead with layers make sure to check your pages in Netscape its the pickiest of the browsers.

In my experience, any fixed width site over 646 pixels in width is going to have problems printing in one browser or another with standard print setting. I don't know if this value will be effected by different printer settings.

Creating a site which resizes will avoid this problem - but the whole page must resize; if you get a horizontal scrollbar then you're not doing it right. It does only have to shrink down to 646px though...

Clever use of table backgrounds and tiles is the best way of resizing graphical content, but then you get clients complaining that all their graphics don't print out. It's a compromise - think carefully before commiting yourself.
