When we first start webdesigning, most of us come across the problem of using wacky or unusual fonts because we think they look cool - only to later discover that many browsers were not equipped to display them and so defaulted to something horrid.

Then we go the other way, as I have. I selected the verdana font as it's pretty much supported everywhere. Thing is, now I seem to use it for every new site I design.

Any thoughts on other nice fonts that shouldn't have many problems with other browsers?

http://bcwdesign.com/tutorials/fonts.shtml

My basic tutorial page for fonts is for HTML newbies, but about halfway down the page you will find a graphic of common fonts and how they appear on PC's and Macs.

The one font I didn't include in that list was Tahoma. Its a windows font, but I think its part of Windows font pack download now and a lot of Macs have access to it. The default "forest" style of the page uses Trebuchet MS so you can see an example of that font in action. If you select the "Granite" style you can see the same page with Tahoma, and if you select Ocean you can see the page with Verdana.

As always, include one of the "safe" fonts as a backup plus the generic serif or sans-serif to at least keep things fairly similar.

(note: requires IE4+ or NS6+ to access stylesheet based design change...if you don't see buttons on the top of the page, your browser doesn't support it).

If a non-standard font is essential to your design, try embedding it. It's better than making text as a graphic (downloads faster as only the characters you use are embedded.)

There is a tutorial at http://hotwired.lycos.com/webmonkey/design/fonts/tutorials/tutorial2.html

You will need the free download of Weft (Web embedding fonts tool) from http://www.microsoft.com/typography/web/embedding/weft2/default.htm
