The top level site is not listed, I've never submitted it.

I've never submitted it.
I list a lot of sites that were never submitted.

I was responding to macdesign, he said that the top level site was already listed - but whether or not I submitted it or didn't submit it, it's not listed. (Or maybe he was saying that in a general sense, that if you do get the top level site listed, that you could potentially lose that listing by submitting the lower level sites.)

it's not listed
It's been listed since March.
Try Business/Healthcare/Marketing_and_Advertising/
By the way, for anyone who can't find their own url - try using the odp search without the www i.e. domainname.tld

"Try Business/Healthcare/Marketing_and_Advertising/"
That's not our top level site for the group of sites that I'm talking about. That's our corporate site... completely different animal. Our Disease sites are about Disease. Our corporate site is about Marketing and Advertising.
Are corporations not allowed to have more than one site and get more than one site listed in the directory? I guess that was the question that I should have asked in the first place. And I already know the answer to that...

All of your pages, folders, sub-domains, and domains are treated as one site by the ODP... and that one site gets one listing - unless editors seek out and decide to add extra deeplinks for exceptional content.

Having once run a small directory I can fully appreciate how much rubbish and spam the editors have to deal with, so I can only admire them.
I have never been able to get a listing in dmoz either but oneday when I have submitted my site correctly I will.
However it would be nice to get an automated message hinting at a possible problem.

What if my different sites have nothing in common? I have one for Wacky Packages stickers, one on real estate, and one on Thomas Edison's TickerTape machines. If I submit all three, is this somehow spamming?

It might be.
It's hard to know without seeing the other urls, but think of each url as a section of your site (where site = total internet presence).
Then read the section of the listing guidelines on deeplinks
dmoz.org/guidelines/site-specific.html#deeplinks if you believe the individual urls meet the deeplinking criteria (Deeplinks should offer content that is unique and extremely useful to a particular category) and do not rehash information already in that category), then suggest them individually.
In this case, and with the current content, I'd think the link you dropped above (against TOS, ie you spammed here) could be listable.
Real Estate is rather more problematic - if its a site for an agent or agency make sure it is suggested to the location of the office (no if's or buts). If for an online only advertising directory it needs to be suggested to the region covered and be at least as good as the best site already listed there. If for an RE resource I'd be amazed if you could write something that isn't already covered by the regurgitated pap added to the major templated sites, so I wouldn't bother with it.
The third might be listable in a product specific category - I don't know if you are thinking in terms of selling, collecting, or providing historical details, so can't suggest the appropiate branch to look into.
<added>
These are my ideas based on my understanding of the current guidelines and do not represent an official nor binding view of ODP editors or staff in general.

The real estate site is for a local landlord club that meets once a month, and I have another that shows my personal buildings that are available for rent.
The Edison site is strickly for collectors and historical info. It's one of only three sites on the entire web devoted to antique stock tickers, and the only one that isn't trying to sell you something. Purely for research purposes. There are sites dedicated to "everything Edison" or just telegraphic machines, but at best, some may show one ticker and it's usually mis-labeled as to it's model and inventor.
As far as the wacky pack site above, there were only 4 sites in the wacky packages category, 2 of which have been gone for a couple years. I submitted my lostwacky site a year ago and got nothing. Then I noticed that the category had no editor, so I volunteered, since there are a few more sites available now. I got a rejection email the next day, saying I was not impartial enough, since I had a site. They dropped the 2 dead sites that I mentioned to them. So now the entire category only has two sites.

I recently read a forum which a person claimed to be a editor at DMOZ and by the way also owned a SEO company, here is my problem: I have owned 3 domains all of which did submissions freely to 800000 engines, two domains I have let go, but one is up and running: ranks1, the old domains were ((url removed)) and ((url removed)) not one of these 3 URL's have ever been listed on DMOZ and I had the gull to wonder why.

If you have been spamming DMOZ like you are spamming forums with the same message, maybe that's why you are not listed.
