I would love for someone to find a better quality list of, say, a minimum of 2 million sites, where at least 80% of the listings are live, don't redirect, and are from "quality" sites.
When you do, tell Google; no sell it to Google. They would pay very well for such a thing. Until such time, they get free gratis usage of a list with over 5 million results, and a higher percentile of quality listings than my baseline "estimate" of their requirements, above.

BUT there is one site that is deeplinked in one obscure deep category that consists of nothing but affiiate links and is owned by the editor of that category, therefore all of DMOZ consists of poor quality sites and all editors do this ....and I also read on a forum that DMOZ is corrupt and DMOZ editors never tell the truth and there are a couple of websites from disgruntled ex-editors about how bad DMOZ is and I beleive everything I read on the internet ....therefore Google sould stop using DMOZ.

No. I can't do that as I want to be a part of the problem and not part of the solution

As I said, I have no issue with DMOZ, per se. I used to be an editor. I built out my category, and then found it to be a lot of work. I'm sure that many Editors find that it's a lot of work. I have to give credit to those editors that have stuck with it.
However, it doesn't change the fact, that I'm here on the other side, trying to promote web sites, good web sites, and I am having no success getting into the directory.
In fact, I submitted a well-designed site with over 2,000 pages of factual content and had discussions with DMOZ editors. They admitted that the site I was submitting was an excellent resource, but that I'd just have to wait my turn like everyone else.
That's OK, it's good to know that I'm in the same boat as everyone else and that no one is getting preferential treatment.
Thanks for your time, cbp and g1smd, I appreciate your opinions and I've learned a lot.

I started this thread ... this is just an update.
I waited another year but still didn't get accepted. I made sure that I didn't make any new applications to DMOZ as that might be seen as spamming.
Anyway now that big companies like youtube are around everyone uploads their car videos to them and you know I bet they get in DMOZ (yes, youtube gets 27 listings) I wonder if they waited 3 years, somehow I doubt it. I've been offering the same basic service for motorsport videos (without all the advertising) for years and DMOZ would not list me - period.
I've payed for the hosting costs from my pocket making not one cent, I've admined the site year in year out. I have had many emails of feedback thanking me for the service (mostly from local people who know the site through word of mouth).
Anyway I have had no new uploads to the site for months now, and traffic is way down, which I put down to the new big companies that offer video uploads / download services.
I don't think it is very fair, not that big companies are taking my traffic so much, but that the small guy who has been doing it for years on a non profit basis, as a service, can't even get a listing in DMOZ to help promote it.

Just let it go my friend, it's not worth the worry.
I have many top 10 sites that aren't in DMOZ. It was a good idea at the time...
