Maybe I just have bad timing, but 80 percent of the time I try to get into ODP their servers are overloaded. I can't even check my submissions from a few months ago. Anyone know a back door, or do I need to get up at 2 in the morning--or simply change my patrol pattern?

Pretty much have to check out a partner site or try at 2am.
Even the editors have a hard time getting in on anything other than the editor mirror.
I think they are getting new servers right now...

Hardware is on order.
Some stuff has already been done, like new server for editor forum, and for RDF files, and this has already reduced the loading on existing servers a little.
The Open Directory Project has been more successful than anyone would ever have guessed: more sites, more categories, more editors, more spam submitted, etc etc.
Priority has been to improve editing environment first (still ongoing), then finally improve public access. No point in improving public access so that more sites are submitted, if then editors can't edit the submissions!
Work will probably still take another few months. As always, for just browsing the directory you are better off using
(forum bug always breaks first URL in a posting http://ch.dmoz.org/ no idea why)
http://ch.dmoz.org/ or http://directory.google.com/ etc.
Only use dmoz.org when you want to actually submit something.
That is my impression anyway.

Thanks for the explanation. Even submitting something is hard to do with the slow servers.

I have said it before, and I will say it again: The gang at ODP does a great job of getting my sites listed. I have NEVER waited more than a week to have them visited and then listed by the editiors.
I cannot, for the life of me, figure out why everyone has soooooooooooo much trouble with getting their sites into the directory, and then in getting in to check them. I don't see a whole lot of traffic from ODP, but I do see several dozen hits in a week on different sites, so obviously others are able to get in and drill.

Lucky you.
We're telling you what we see. I suspect your submissions success may have to do with your category(s) and who and how many volunteers are reviewing it.
What is the status on their profitability? I'm getting the impression they are not as we may think, not for profit. Are they?

Ted, I suspect you are right about the categories. All of our sites are small businesses with local or regional markets(Ontario, New York City, Boston, and New England). I am sure that being located in specific sub-cats certainly helps the editors review and place the sites.
My point being that those with new sites shouldn't despair of getting listed, as not all cases are the same as what you and the others in this thread seem to be experiencing.

Google is usually about 6 to 10 weeks behind the ODP. The RDF from the ODP always used to be produced weekly. Google used to pick up a copy about once per month, and then take several weeks to apply it to their site.
There was a 5 month gap where the ODP did not produce a workable valid RDF file, from 2002 September to 2003 February. The RDF has been about weekly since then, but one or two are missing in the last 5 weeks, due to hardware upgrades again.

forum bug botched first link in post ch.dmoz.org again
As well as http://ch.dmoz.org/ you can now also access http://de.dmoz.org/ from a few days ago.
New RDF was also posted a few days ago at: http://rdf.dmoz.org/rdf/

d'oh
I just can't submit sites at the moment - constantly comes back as a 500 server error or cannot find server...
I love hte 500 error message - tells you to email the webmaster noting anything you might have done to break it - what, like used the Submit button you think they mean??

Don't Panic! You didn't break anything. The server is under such severe load that I expect there are many thousands of those errors per day at the moment.
Try submitting at a time when most of the US might be asleep, and see if it goes through any better.

Actually to be fair, I tried the other morning and it only took a couple of goes (I'm in the UK). This afternoon (US morning) was hopeless.
So there you go everyone - do it when the Americans are asleep!

Yeah for me the best times are evening Pacific US time and very early morning Pacific US time. Otherwise it can be real flaky. Like others said we aren't too concerned about submissions right now because we hardly even have enough time to edit.

Thejenn,
You can go to resource-zone and check the status of your site submissions.

Thanks roatan, though I'm guessing that was directed at someone else.
I fixed your link as well...we've got no problem with folks linking to resource-zone, it's a great, umm...resource for folks trying to get an ODP listing.

That's if RZ is ever up. All morning I haven't been able to reach it.

RZ was flaky last evening (UK time) with "Connection Refused" or only serving half a page before petering out.
Overnight it was OK, but has been inaccessible today; and still is now.

Is it running off the same servers that DMOZ is?
