Is anybody having problems submitting to dmoz? I've tried with IE and Mozilla and both just stall after clicking submit.

I can't even get to my category. I get an error message saying Access Denied. I've tried other categories as well, and I get the same thing, sometimes at different levels, but ultimately get the same message before reaching very far into a main category.

Anybody know what's up?

yes this apperently has been an ongoing problem, I was talking to others on another forum and there was about 20+ replies that people were having the same problem. Either after submit click it stales (which is happening to me) or the catagories are coming up 404 not found.

DMOZ Editors are around the net saying they are upgrading the site but it's a slow process and only sections are going at a time, seems like it is taking ALOT longer then expected and alot of people are having trouble with it for weeks now

I have been having problems also for a while now. It works on and off, but most of the time it doesn't.

Hopefully the upgrading won't take longsmile

Regarding the port 8081 problem: Staff is investigating it. It was thought of as solved for some time, but it seems it depends upon server load if it appears. That may be hard to track down as you can imagine.

that's good to know, but the big problem that i'm reading alot is after people hit submit it just freezes and thus cant add a site. Is that being looked into also?

That should be a server-overloaded issue. The internal synchronization process has been redesigned with the server upgrade. Looks like it isn't the optimum yet. ;-)

do you suggest a good time on when to try and submit then to get around this? I am on the East Coast US and i have tried a variety of timeframes - throughout the day and have even tried late night and very early morning - all with same results

I always have good luck with the Swiss version at http://ch.dmoz.org . It seems that that version/server is not as busy as the others.

Normally I get up an hour before I did today and am experiencing less problems then (6:30-7:00 german summer time). Maybe not on the weekend but in the week.

Hello,

Because many of you and including me are encountering this problem, I have created a little script that would ease the submission job.
What it does: You submit your data into our database, our server will attempt a submission every minute. Did the submission was successfull: you are notified by email, was it not successfull: your submission will be re-attempted until it is successfull.
I have used it with many success until now, others have benefited from it as well.
I believe that is the sollution until DMOZ get their servers configured right.

The script is free and is located at: [url removed. This tool violates the DMOZ TOS and therefore cannot be posted here.]

Just fill in the form as you would on DMOZ.
This script only works with Dutch and Englisch categories.

I hope this helps you out!

thank you very much that was great - I submitted and by the time i checked my email i had a success email already stating site was submitted and ready for review.

Thank you very much - I'm sure there will be alot of others who can use this also - If you do not mind i will notify others to use this also since I have seen topic's on DMOZ all over the net stating they can't submit.

Warm Regards,
Bill

For the most part, submission and access problems have been resolved already. A major part of the problem was/is automated submission services and over-aggressive spidering of pages. These types of accesses have been banned as they become a problem.

I strongly suggest that you do not use this method of submission.

Despite of the fact that 'most' problems are said to be solved, I still encounter difficulties using the 'traditional' way of submission, especially at busy times (when the USA is awake).
You might strongly suggest not to use my script, so you strongly suggest people should wait untill DMOZ has found the time to tweak a little to their scripts. Your intentions are good, but people want their site submitted, especially after stressfull numerous attempts.
I don't mean this post agressive, but the problem is still 'I can't submit to the ODP' and not 'when will all these problems be over'.
My script was designed to not submit agressively. It first looks if there is something to submit and it will only act when there is data to submit.

I hope banning your little bot/script is the very next tweak to the system.

I'm seeing lots of new (October) submissions all over. You're naive to think that a submission problem could ONLY be because of ODP.

'You're naive to think that a submission problem could ONLY be because of ODP.'
--> I don't see Google or MSN or AltaVista having problems and they are likely more the victim of automated submissions.
I don't want to begin a debat about 'they know how to write a script and they don't '.

If you do not agree with me, I have no problem with that, not using my script will work then best for you.
It solved my problem, that is what counts I believe.
I will be glad when their scripts run again as it should, that way a normal submission will be possible.

An automate tool should NEVER, EVER be used for DMOZ submissions, period.

Automated submissions and duplicate submissions are the first red flag for spam, and it is not advisable to use this at all. I'm sorry you're frustrated with the submission errors, we all are, but this is not a solution, and I'm with KCtipton, it's bound to cause more problems.

You have no idea of what your script is producing to ODP on the backend, and it's simply not worth the risk for others to use it. It's fine if you do yourself, but please don't present it as though it's the answer to everyone's problems. It's not.

Please edit the URL out of your posts and put it in your profile.

After some internal discussion, DMOZ staff has told us to announce that automatic submission is not allowed. So please turn it off, thank you.
