I don't understand something and maybe someone can shed light on this.
My competitor has 500+ back links to their website. I have seen most of them. Yet on their own website they only have a handful of outbound links. How could they possibly get so many people to link to them without offering this back? Do people hide their Link Directories? What purpose would that serve??
The site has only been online for 6 months as well.

Some sites get widely linked to simply because they are good sites, and have information that other people value. Sometimes a webmaster doesn't have the time to write loads more content for his site, and can direct people to some other site for more information on a topic. If the original site is good enough then those visitors will come back to the main site after reading the stuff on the other site.

Some sites have a lot of links from other sites simply because they also own all of those other sites, or have paid money for the links. Those sorts of sites and those sorts of links can eventually hinder the site ranking rather than help it.

I guess its tradeoffs - do I spend time reciprocating links or do I spend time improving my site?

I have opted for the later and have been rewarded with a lot of one way links to my site and a very good rankings that were unaffected by Florida.

A lot of larger coporates (eg Nike, MacDonalds, etc) have very high PR (from a lot of incoming links) and do not do link exchanges...

Then there is the speculation that SE's (now or in the future) could devalue reciprocal links and give greater value to one way links (please do not quote this as a fact, is speculation).

Another way of looking at it is - Google say something link "think of the user" "build it for the user" - if they say that, then it would be logical to assume that they would set their algorithm to detect pages that are valuable for the user and give credit for these things (...its debatable whether this is actaully suceeding or not). In this context, reciprocal links are not necessarily of value to the user .... one way links to sites that have content of value are of value to the user.

Just my 2 cents ... IMHO

Getting you site listed in DMOZ should get you a lot more links than just one because so many other directories are based on it. Also, you can go and submit to every free directory you can find and ask for a link on all related pages you can find and get the numbers up pretty high...My brother did it for about two days last fall on his site (some recips too ~ 15) and is up to 132 links now. His design and layout is weak, but he has a solid Page Rank of 5, and is just now trying to make it SE friendly.
