Hi! I'm not sure if this is the section I should post this question, but here it goes. I need a data source (text file, Access db, mySql, etc) to start yellow pages like website. I need the data for the businesses in a categorized format with their names, phones, and addresses. I'd prefer the whole US region data, but would settle for a New York buisnesses only for starters. If anyone can suggest such source or recommend where I can get it, it will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

You can source your data from the ODP (DMOZ). The data will be in RDF format. There are some commercial utilities available to modify the data into most database formats. The use of data from ODP is free subject to this license agreement http://dmoz.org/license.html where source attribution is mandatory.

there are a few providers out there who compile business listings and then license them out to directory assistance & IYP providers.
take a look at Acxiom & infoUSA -- those two have pretty good files and they dominate the IYP landscape. probably very, very expensive.
other providers i would look at include experian and amacai. much less money, but a little less accurate and comprehensive.
i know amacai would probably parse out the NYC listings for you.
