Hello all,

I am trying to start a small internet based business and I am totally perplexed as to how to get the word out about it. So far I have added loads of meta tags, gotten a domain name, and tried to add it to as many free directories as possible, but nothing seems to be working.
I am willing to spend money on advertising but I don't want to get locked into something for a long time. Am i the only one here confused by terms like seo optimization, ISEDB, DMOZ, and ppo? I have thought about signing up for something like overture but the flash presentation seems to gloss over things like how much it actually costs, how long you are signed up for, whether or not it actually gets you listed, and if people will be able to find your site. I am so frustrated.

Welcome in!

Work your way through the postings from the last month or so, and things should become a lot more clear.

You can alter the content of your site, and carefully write the title and meta description such that your site ranks higher. That is the SEO bit.

You should submit the site to directories, and try to get other on-topic sites to link to your site, so that search engines find you too.

Hi,

Working your way through the posts here is an excellent learning experience! The possible drawback is that it is not 'methodical'. In the area of submitting to directories, you may have a look at the recently published article here [url removed. Please do not self promote] - it is a comprehensive guide and assumes very little prior knowledge.

If you want the 30 second quick lesson... just go add 50 pages of content to your site and than submit it to Yahoo and DMOZ and than find 5 other relevant sites and get them to link to it.

That is 80% of the equation right there

I am trying to start a small internet based business and I am totally perplexed as to how to get the word out about it.

Forums like the ones here teach you how to seo your site

So far I have added loads of meta tags, gotten a domain name, and tried to add it to as many free directories as possible, but nothing seems to be working.

It takes time. Links from other sites are the best ways of getting into the various engines out there

I am willing to spend money on advertising but I don't want to get locked into something for a long time.

Keyword research first then ppc(overture - google adwords - findwhat.com) will give your site exposure quickly. When your money runs out the ad stops running. ROI return on investment. You would like to make your advertising money back and profit.

Am i the only one here confused by terms like seo optimization, ISEDB, DMOZ, and ppo?

dmoz = opendirectory project large directory

seo = techniques to help your rankings in searchengines 1 aspect keyword tag 2nd aspect title tag 3rd keyword frequency the list goes on!

I have thought about signing up for something like overture but the flash presentation seems to gloss over things like how much it actually costs, how long you are signed up for, whether or not it actually gets you listed, and if people will be able to find your site. I am so frustrated.

Well overture and adwords are similar forms of ppc pay per click advertising. Yes if you can afford to pay and your paying for the one of the top three positions you will get good exposure til your money runs out.

There are a bunch of terms I described above you can use the search function here under the forums button to research these and other seo terms to get you acquainted with them.
