I run a resume service in Australia and up until recently, I received a healthy referral list from google. Then suddenly google introduced a local directory group, and sent my site into a directory corner which I doubt even the most dedicated surfer will able to find. The have listed the site by region rather than as a national / international service.
This has also reduced my referrals by over 90%. Strangely, the balance has come back from Yahoo !
Anyone got an idea of what's going on here and how I can get my site taken out of a sub-directory and back into the main listing pot ?

The Google directory is a copy of the Open Directory Project data at dmoz.org which they make available as an RDF file at rdf.dmoz.org/rdf/ every few weeks. Many hundreds of sites use this data, but many update very irregularly, and some are still using 4 year old data.
There are projects in the ODP to move sites which serve a small area into categories defined by their geographical region; specifically the area the business is based, rather than the area it serves.
For example, what use is it to have web designers from all over the world categoried in 26 categories labelled from A to Z, with thousands listed in each. In the new scheme they would be listed where they are based.
In some cases it is possible to have both a Topical (by subject) listing as well as a Regional (by location) listing. See the specific guidelines for the categories that you are interested in.
After you have read it all very carefully, you may wish to enquire more at the Resource Zone forum. Be sure to read the forum TOS and the "READ THIS BEFORE POSTING" threads, to see what you can ask, and how you should format the question.
Be aware that ODP editors will not move listings around to suit webmaster purposes such as improving PageRank, or positions in the SERPs, adding keywords, or hype, or any such SEO-related activities. Don't embarress them by even asking for such things.

Jimguide is right on. Google is just using DMOZ so anything that happens there will impact your site. I always suggest going to http://www.resource-zone.com/forum/index.php to communicate with editors about your campaign.
