I have list of no. of directories to submit.
But there may be some inactive directory (means they are not running, not operating, they seen online as their domain, space period is not expired)
So submitting to those directories proves useless and waste of time.
So, how can I know that particular directory updating data on regular basis or particular directory is inactive since long?
Thanks in advance

In my opinion, the only directories that really matter are Yahoo and DMOZ. All the energy you spend putting into trying to get into other ones are a waste of time in my opinion. Focus all your efforts on these two.

I would say business.com drives quite a considerable amout of traffic. And for SEO purposes, there are many directories with categories with high PR. It is a cheap and easy means of getting quallity on-topic links. As a throw in to the SEO side, you may get some clicks from some of the bigger 2 tier directories.

Local & topical directories are well worth listing in as well as many other great International directories.. when it seems that is not worth while it appears that the level of traffic and positioning you are seeking is outside the scope of normal. If you can afford not to research listings that suit your website you must have something going on that I don't understand.
