Hi there,
I'm running a non-profit music site. I can't say that there is much competition out there but I want to be at the top spot for the specific genre I'm aiming. I'm thinking of wowdirectory and goguides for paid submission. My site is new and I want it to be spidered and indexed really quickly. I searched through this forum but unfortunately most of the topics are related with dmoz. I can see that people are obsessed with dmoz. Anyway can somebody recommend any other paid site which will contribute to my site. And also is there any way of learning pr of a website besides using google toolbar. I don't want to install that.
Thanks

Hello techtechtech.
>pr of a website besides using google toolbar.
Here's one I use:
http://www.webmasterbrain.com/get-multiple-pagerank-values-without-google-toolbar--tool12.htm
>other paid sites
I've bought several sponsored submissions from wowdirectory and am quite happy with them. It got my sites fully spidered.
Here's a few. I'll post more tomarrow.
http://bluefind.com is a good value. $50 one time fee for a strong link
http://musicmoz.org/ free!
http://sbd.bcentral.com/3040.aspx
http://www.searchturtle.com/ only $5
http://www.thisisouryear.com/ only $8

Thank you very much fourstardragon,
I have bought a sponsored listing from wowdirectory. It seems that the category that I'm listed has a pr of 0. I paid for nothing it seems

If it is a true not for profit site then you should be able to submit to Yahoo's directory for free.

fourstardragon yes I'm the webmaster of Metal Now. It seems that I'm the only one on wowdirectory to be in a PR 0 category . I hope that PR will increase with time

I've submitted to Yahoo's directory MONTHS ago and I'm still waiting for a site review. I'm not too sure if you would get any PageRank from Yahoo anyway because their links don't have plain URL's.
If you review anywhere near as many metal bands/albums as Satan Stole My Teddy Bear or BNR Metal Pages, then you should be getting an above average PR from sheer number of pages alone, even if you're not extensively linked from outside sites.
BlueFind looks very tempting. Although their Music page currently has a PR0, it will probably become a PR6 like the other Arts & Humanities subcategories. Also there's very few links on there right now so when the PageRank shows up, it won't get divvied up among so many links. My concern is that the directory changed hands not too long ago, and I'm wondering how long all that PageRank is going to stay.
BTW, do you like Voivod and Anacrusis?

>yes I'm the webmaster of Metal Now.
I used to own a rock club... I miss those days. Send me a description of the site and I'll submit it to some directories for you. What ones have you submitted to already? (Besides yahoo and dmoz.) And what is your city and state?
>It seems that I'm the only one on wowdirectory to be in a PR 0 category.
One of mine is in a PR-0 cat, too. (It's a new cat, though, and should creep up to 5 or 6 in a few months. I'm in this for the long term. Yours is pretty deep and won't get much PR.) The new submissions page is PR-6 and got me fully indexed within a week.
I'll email wowdirectory and see what they can do for you.
P.S. You should have waited to submit to DMOZ until you have plenty of content in place.
P.P.S. You need to get as many bands and venues as possible to link to you. It doesn't matter if they are low-PR. (One or two strong links to your homepage will take care of your PR needs.) What google is looking for is anchor text from different domains and IP addresses. Links from relevant sites help, and will be more important in the future. By anchor text, I mean keyword-rich, rather that "click here."

---You should have waited to submit to DMOZ until you have plenty of content in place.
I already have more than 40000 pages. I don't think I need to add more content besides regular updates The thing is that google only indexed my homepage so it's little depressing. I was naive enough to think that once you have a good site all people will just storm at it
I paid 20$ to searchturtle for express listing yesterday. Hope that turns out ok. Still no word from them.
wereworm=> I think Voivod is good but I mostly listen to European doom/death metal bands these days(except the times when I'm listening korn's last album).
fourstardragon=> I really curious what happened to your club? Did you sold it? I submitted to most high PR directories. Most of them welcomed the site but still I see no spiders from any search engines. Do you have any recommendations for more directories for music sites?
Its really great to find helpful people here
Thank you all

One final note
I'm thinking about adding my site to business.com under music_reference directory. It has a PR of 4. But as I said before my site is non-profit so can business.com bring me any benefit(visitors/rankings on search engines/more spiders)?
Thanks

>I already have more than 40000 pages.
Oh, never mind.
I've emailed wowdirectory for you. Have you submitted to musicmoz?
>business.com
Hold off on business.com. It's home page is PR-0 now. It could be temporary, or they could be on their way to being banned. It's $99 a year and many of the links are redirects. (Useless for SEO.) Bluefind and bcentral are better deals. I'm about to submit to bluefind myself. I'm going to submit to bcentral when I get three sites together. (It's $50 for one and $100 for three sites.) John Scott from Bluefind is starting a new directory, Sevenseek. I think it is worth keeping an eye on.
>really curious what happened to your club?
It was a coffee shop that booked all kinds of music, including lots of metal and hardcore bands. One time, Grammy-nominated jazz musician Danillo Perez performed. That was one of the ten best shows I've ever seen. Sleeping At Last and Low were great shows. Wesley Willis was memorable. I've seen a couple bands that played at my shop on "Uranium," the metal show on the music channel "Fuse."
New landlords took over, cranky people who didn't like all the "kids" hanging around. They didn't renew my lease. An antique store moved in briefly before it closed down. The downtown storefront has been sitting empty for about a year. There are few open parking spots during the day in the downtown, which drives away customers.
I've gone back to computers and am in the process of getting out of debt from the business.
P.S. What key words/phrases are you targeting? An invaluable tool for KW research is http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/
You can get an idea how many people search for a particular KW. (Not total, but on the overture network.)

I'm sorry to hear that. Hope you clean those debts soon.
Well I can't find bcentral. It redirects to microsoft.com . Bluefind looks good. I may use them.
Maybe its just me but i can't find music category in Sevenseek.
>Have you submitted to musicmoz?
I thought when you submit to dmoz you are automatically excepted into(if approved) musicmoz and applying for musicmoz besides dmoz(since I applied for dmoz first) can cause duplicate entries in their system. Should I submit to musicmoz?
P.S. What key words/phrases are you targeting?
Well I'm not targeting any keywords at the moment.Just metal, metal mp3s, metal videos I guess. I can be number 1 in them but the real traffic comes from(from what I have been able to find out) "heavy metal". It seems its tough out there to get recognition. More than I have ever imagined.

Well I don't use them. Infact I only became aware of them when I tried to promote my site. I use them for link.

Even if people don't use them, many tymes directory pages come up in SE results. People click on the directory, and then follow a link in the directory (even though they may not start their search in the directory).
And places like business.com have plenty of users, a link from them (in my experience) can bring in a good amount of traffic.

Thanks. I wasn't complaining, though. Just giving a short answer why I didn't open up a new place.

Two separate sites. You have to submit to each. I'm an editor at musicmoz, but just Iowa and Illinois. Let me know your city/state and I'll suggest a category.
>Maybe its just me but i can't find music category in Sevenseek.
He will likely add one if requested. I'll post in the support forum for you.
>Well I can't find bcentral. It redirects to microsoft.com
Is it still a directory? It is a microsoft site.
I'd recommend looking up "heavy metal" at http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/
and including some of the popular KW on your home page and throughout the site. Have your title say heavy metal music. Have a site map pointing to the 50 most important pages.

Every submission to WoW gets a listing on the new submission page that is a PR6 and is archived on pages that are direct links from the PR 6 page so they should be PR 5 if Google ever updates. We are not in the business of selling or giving page rank but we do our best to accommodate all webmasters and know the importance of strong back links. Since we are a new directory we are adding topics daily, and will be for the next couple of years. Try to keep in mind that a directory submission in most instances a lifelong commitment.
