(Mods -- please feel free to post this in a different forum if I've placed this incorrectly. Thanks! smile)

Hi all. I've been part of the SearchKing portal network since late 1999/early 2000, and have nearly always been happy with the service -- especially since as an "early adopter" my directories were free. smile I know some have had issues with founder Bob Massa's SEO practices (the PRAD network thing, etc.), but generally my own SK experience has been quite satisfactory.

For the last couple of months, however, there's been a greater than usual amount of downtime (like, 75% of the time!), non-responses to emails, and the frustrating disappearance of posts in their forum asking for info. (The loss of posts could be due to server problems, I don't mean to suggest something nefarious!) A day of uptime has been followed by a week of downtime, and vice versa. Very frustrating.

Now things are even stranger. Last night my directories were working for the first time in a week. But once again today my portals are all down, and even the paid "premium" portals with their own domains/special servers aren't working either.

Worse, when I visited SearchKing today, I discovered a huge change in their setup: the search engine/directory is gone, as is all reference to the portal network. Now it's just a list of links to paid SEO-type services, and SK itself is billed as "The world's source for top quality SEO services and products."

Does anyone know if this is the end of SK's role as a portal provider? That would be okay -- I know the free ride was likely to end someday -- but if it's true, I sure would've appreciated some kind of notice and the ability to download my data. My portals didn't have a huuuuge number of listings, but they held about 600 sites all told. Recreating that is gonna be a pain.

I don't mean to be churlish: SearchKing was a terrific community for a long while, and helped me grow as a web developer. And the opportunity to run a modified version of Hyperseek for free was a godsend! I'll probably never be able to afford Hyperseek on my own, so even though I adore the program I'll have to find another. Anyway, all I'm saying is that I'm grateful for the years of free service SK has given me ... but I do wish the SK team would be more upfront about whatever's going on.

Sorry for the long post. Many thanks in advance for any info/help you guys can offer!

Good question. Actually if I were you, ... you might post this as well at http://forums.searchenginewatch.com

I see Bob posting there a lot. His member name is "massa". And if you do ... and get a response, please let us know.

Hmmm.

Yesterday was indeed 2005 January 09, but it was a Sunday. That article is from a previous year, but the Geeks at Yale weren't clever enough to include which year it was anywhere on that page. Really unhelpful.
