Is there a need/demand for more web directories?

What from a business point of view produces $$ from owning a directory?

Well that is if you list the submitted sites for free I mean - how does a directory make any money?

Because of Google Adsense, thousands of “scrapers” are created daily. But a good specialized directory is still a very good idea, and Adsense can make it worth while.

Directory can makes money 3 ways:

1. Advertisement - your own, AdSense, etc.
2. Paid Inclusion
3. Premium Listing - for example, on top of the listing.

There are other things you can do to squeeze out more dollars, but it's risky (i.e., losing potential customer) once you make it too complicated.

Anyway, there are a lot of directories, but competition will help sort everything out. It's really depend on what the customer looks for.

1. Traffic - then look for directories with good Alexa ranking. But AR does not guarantee traffic since some directories are so huge, each page only get a small portion of the total traffic.

2. PR - not all directories are good at passing PR. There are a lot of directories that has no PR, or PR 0, on sub pages.

3. SEO - not all directories will link to you using keywords additional to your company name. Also some directories do not provide direct links.

As such, you can always start a new directory if you know what the customers want, then advertise your strengths properly.

Like unreviewed said, a niche directory is a good place to start.

And of course a good web directory had better be useful to general web searchers as well. For every paid site added, the owner should add ten additional non-commercial sites at least. The database should have several thousand listings before it is even officially launched.

Directories created just to pass PR are easy to spot as they have few listings and only seem to have commercial sites listed. I am sure that Google and other search engines can notice this too. The Web doesn't need any more of these. However, good directories which aim to please searchers as well as webmasters are still needed. The more the better.

Agree, best web directories are the one with searchers in mind. I always ask the question, do I want a visitor to see this site in my directory.

Unfortunately, I haven't reach a 1,000 sites yet since it's a 1 man show and there are many things I am working on simultaneously.
